THE REDISCOVERY OF WARTIME RELICS

THE REDISCOVERY OF WARTIME RELICS

It's not often that a news story pops up that I find so fascinating that I must write about it. Normally, if something piques my interest it's passed on in a tweet and soon forgotten. However this week I stumbled across a Daily Mail article about the discovery of a WWII Kittyhawk P40 that disappeared 70 years ago. I was so intrigued by this discovery that I thought I should take a look at some other incredible WWII relics.

First the Kittyhawk P40. On the 28th of June 1942, Flight Sergeant Dennis Copping bravely climbed from the cockpit of his crashed fighter and set out into the Western Desert of Egypt to find rescue. Unfortunately that rescue never came and he, and his fighter were lost to an unforgiving landscape. This is until 70 years later, when the P40 emerged from the harsh monotonous terrain. The site has been described as a "time capsule" with much of the aircraft remaining intact. Aviation historian Andy Saunders has said "It's the aviation equivalent of Tutankhamun's tomb."

This great find isn't the first rediscovery of wartime machinery and surely won't be the last.

On May the 31st 1942, three Midget Japanese Submarines stealthy entered Sydney Harbour and killed 21 brave Australian sailors by firing a torpedo that detonated under the HMAS Kuttabul. The submarines were hunted down and sunk by Allied vessels including the USS Chicago and HMAS Geelong. Two of the submarines were found while one Midget Submarine, the M24 disappeared into the vast wartime crevices of Sydney Harbour. 64 years later in November of 2006, a group of recreational divers discovered the sub tangled in nets in 54 meters of water. The wreck site now falls under Australian Commonwealth Historic Shipwrecks law, and a protective zone has been placed around the site. Recovery of the sub was estimated to cost upwards of $60 Million Australian Dollars, so for the moment it will continue its service as an artificial reef.
Speaking of Sydney. The HMAS Sydney was one of Australia's greatest wartime mysteries. On the 19th of November 1941, the light cruiser engaged the German Raider HSK Kormoran, losing a fierce battle and taking 645 lives with it as it sank below the water. For decades, the location of the wreck was unknown. After the battle, only a single unoccupied lifeboat (damaged by machine gun fire) was found and added not only the mystery but the tragedy of such a disaster. The mystery was solved in March of 2008, when the wreck was found off the coast of Western Australia and it too is now protected under Australian Heritage Law.
According to residents of the time, the tank rolled into town and simply broke down or ran out of fuel. It was then pushed into a hole and buried, only to be rediscovered decades later when the local council initiated routine road repairs.

The M5 wasn't the only tank to undergo a multi-decade long subterranean slumber. In September of 2000, a Russian tank captured by the Germans in 1944 was pulled from the boggy bank of a lake near Johvi, Estonia.
Uncovering a wartime relic isn't limited to benign wrecks. Some have been unfortunate enough to come across live and unstable ordinance. I know after my own Grandfather passed away, my grandmother found M16s hidden in the roof cavity. Fortunately it was the 80′s and Australian firearm amnesties were common so little inconvenience was caused. Although this wasn't the case for 30 families in the UK's Seaham just last week who evacuated from their homes after a WWII hand grenade was discovered during excavation works. The grenade was determined to no longer be live.

The same cannot be said for a 1,100 pound bomb that was discovered by workers building a sports stadium in Goettingen, Germany in 2010. Sadly, 3 people were killed during the defusing of the bomb.

While the discovery of these relics is exciting and provides endless fascination, it must always be remembered that many servicemen and servicewomen died defending freedom and it is because of their selfless actions that we able to go about our lives with the rights we have today. Lest we forget.

If I could not smoke cigars

Readers might remember I’ve gotten back into Snuff (nasal tobacco). I find it a great alternative to cigars and has many advantages over cigars firstly, there is no smoke so does not offend anyone. Also it is so dam cheap, good snuff can be as little as$ 4. a tin of 25g and it last me for about 3 or 4 months!!! Even if it was $50 a tin that is way, way cheaper than cigars!

I’m on one wage (small wage) on which I support my wife who does not work and not part of the “look at me and how much money I have” that one sometimes sees with the “cigar set”. Snuff on the other hand is a great leveller from the highest Prince to the lowliest subject, they can all have in common this simple please of nicotine.

There is a great range of snuff and many types, from plain tobacco to menthol and flavoured.

Please don’t get me wrong, I love cigars but there are alternatives that I think many of us who love nicotine should not forget.

PS I know this is not directly about cigars, rather options for smokers but at least it is about tobacco and not cars, holidays and family as some here write about:)

Working Out of Town

Starting in June I'm going to be working a 12 day on 7 day off shift and I'm hoping to bring a few smokes with me. I've been thinking about getting a travel humidor (like a cigar caddy) but I need to be able to properly store them for about 12 days. Is a travel humidor sufficient? I only need to bring 3 - 5 stogies each time. Its a dry worksite, too so that means no booze. Yikes. I gotta have some Cubans there with me or it it's gonna get real ugly real fast.

I'm a newbie as ye can see. Most likely one of the youngest on this site I would imagine, with 18 years on me.

Starting out with cigars, hoping to be well educated by the end of the year. It'll be great if I made a few fellow newbies (and oldies) with a good taste!

So now a little bit about my "collection":

I've a desktop humi with a mere 8 cuban sticks,I know...True Aficionado!!!
TRYING to age them for at least 6 or 7 months, with a few extra sticks inbetween by the end of the summer.

So I hope I'm welcome here and looking forward to discovering more about the cigar world.

Cheers!!

In Toronto, we have very little military presence on our city streets, except in parades or if there is some kind if event. Even when I have been to Chicago or New York, minimal.
Today in the subway in Paris, 3 soldiers in camouflage uniforms, carrying machine guns strolled up and down the platform. No one so much as flinched. I was spooked!

My Dog, Buddy the Labrador Ninja Helps a 25 Pound Turkey Off Himself

It has been an exciting morning at EZ Acres in the beautiful mountains of Western NC.

I was sitting on the deck at 7:30AM enjoying the view and a cup of coffee. My wife was walking our walking my faithful Labrador, Buddy.

I almost spilled my coffee when I heard what sounded like a shotgun blast.

Buddy and the boss were walking up the road toward my next door neighbor's empty house. When the turned the corner buddy spotted a turkey about half way down the driveway.

Buddy was perplexed. He wrinkled his forehead, sat down next to my wife and let out a tentative 'woof'.

The startled, 25 pound turkey took flight as only a large turkey can, away from Buddy and towards the neighbors house. At this time of the morning the sun was rising and was directly behind the house.

The results...dinner.

The window was a pressurized double pane window. It took 3 of us an hour to cleans all the glass.

After entering the house the turkey sailed through the bedroom and landed about 20 feet through the room, through the door and out into the hallway.

I feel badly that he went this way, but his demise was instantaneous, and he is in the fridge.

Dry Boxing Your Cigars

Why dry box your cigars before smoking? Is it because your humidor is at too high humidity to get a good burn on your stick, does it alter the flavours at all or do you only dry box certain sizes or types? Just curious as to the reasoning.

Well just 2 years ago I retired from the workforce after 50 yrs.of hard labor it happened.Yesterday morning my phone rung and on the other end was my sons former boss and still his best friend. He asked me if I would be interested in working partime for a network of Car Dealerships in a radius of approx 200km(120mi).What they need is a driver to deliver and pick up documentation from those dealerships. It's 3 days a week.So I said I would be interested in doing that and since I finished most on my Honey Do list I would have time for that.An hour later I was contacted by those people and they asked me if I could swing by for an interview.I went there and after 1/2hr of talk the job was mine. With that it boosts my pension and it also gives me more money to better support my hobbies, travel and cigars.Nothing wrong with that,is there?I'm starting there the week after next week and I think with my first paycheck I get a box of sticks from the Czar.Looking forward to that.

Hello from Middle America (Minnesota)

Hello,

Finally stumbled upon this site after watching 20+ videos on youtube... I'm relatively new to cigar smoking, and have found the youtube channel to contain invaluable information. I just started receiving my first cuban cigar shipments a few weeks ago and my Liebherr XS200 humidor is already full... It seems to be a great humidor (holding temp and humidity perfectly), but it's just not big enough for the amount of boxes I would like to start aging. So far I have a 2 boxes of AST SEP 2009 Monty #4's, a pack of Cohiba Siglo II Tubos 3'S x 5 packs PLM OCT06, a pack of Partagas Serie P No.2 Tubos - 3'S x 5 packs (OCT 11), a couple 3 packs of the Cohiba Behike (52, 54, 56) - 2010, a box of 10 of Cohiba Siglo VI, a box of 10 Cohiba Maduro-5 Secretos, a box of 10 Romeo y Julietta short churchills, and a box of 10 cuaba distinguidos. I'm excited sample these over the next few months, and then let the nicer ones age for a while. I would love to start purchasing from cigar-czar.com, as from your youtube channel you are among the best in the biz and would love to help support this community.

I'm thinking about buying a box of Monty #2's and a Robusto Sampler, and if anyone has some picks they think I should add to my order I would love to hear them...

Also, I've started doing research on either building or buying a larger humidor that can support a larger amount of cigars. I've looked at and read reviews of the Monolith 1200c, but I worry about the small capacity of H2O reservoir and quality (made in China). I have a basement that's temp stays around 62-68 degrees F year round, so I think I just need something that holds humidity should be all I need as I don't think the temperature will be problematic. Minnesota is a northern climate so it get's incredibly dry in the winters, so I need something that can manage to keep the humidity levels high enough. Since I have the Liebherr XS200 I can keep my more prized cigars in there, but any recommendations on a humidor that can hold at least 800 cigars would be appreciated...

Post LFTH Review - Ladies Oris Watch

OK. So, some time back, I won the LFTH draw for a ladies Oris watch.

Mind you, I'm married to an accountant. So, you can probably figure how any purchases over a dollar go over... needless to say... the box of cigars that were tied to winning this watch got me a free pass... on that box... and a few others...

But... I wanted to post a follow up for a few reasons.

1- Seriously, if you're in the market for a fine watch, you really should consider an Oris. I'm not in the know when it comes to watches. But, I have several family members that are. (Did you know they even have watch magazines? Crazy eh?) They all say that Oris is a great watch. And, well... it sure looks like it.

2- Speaking of looks like it... the watch definitely looks like "class"... period.

3- It has a nice weight and feel to it as well... and... the movement is nice and smooth.

In all honesty... as you may have figured out... I don't wear the watch... not being a lady and all. But, I must say... my wife LOVES it.

Needless to say... I'm hoping to be in the market for a watch of this caliber in the near future. You can bet that while I'll be looking around at the different models... my first contact to get pricing will be Rob and company. Lets face it... how can you go wrong with good pricing and the great level of customer service we already enjoy from the Czar?

Humidor Help!

So in the process of my last move I misplaced some of the components to the power supply used in my 1987 Carmac humidor (made for Nat Sherman). It has an AC unit that is powered by a regulated power supply (10A) which got way too hot when it had to do any sort of work. This heat transferred to the back of the humidor where it was bolted in so I moved it out of the humidor which resolved that issue.

My current problem is that I need to replace the power supply since I cant find a few pieces (I know my fiance threw them out thinking they were trash, but I'd never admit to it anywhere public... oops) so I am looking for a PS that will power this guy without catching fire or overheating:

Cabinet Humidor Project

So getting back to Vegas, I'll have a place to work again, and because my father and I have outgrown 4 28 bottle Vinotemps, and then a Aristocrat M+ 25D, it's time for something bigger. But I don't feel like paying Bob Staebell pricing again, so he's what I have in the works. I have a considerable amount of singles and boxes, and need plenty of places to keep them both of them. It's a dual zone humidor, the right side being controlled by it's own active humidifier and it's own peltier, so I can age boxes at ideal conditions for long periods of time, without constantly changing their atmosphere by opening the door, rummaging through my singles, and closing it again. The left will be it's own conditions, slightly lower RH (65% instead of 71% for the aging side) so I can just grab and go without effecting the aging boxes. I know that keeping the door open for a couple of minutes to find the cigar I want to smoke won't do much, because being bundled together and inside of a cedar box makes for a good buffer, but leaving boxes in unchanged conditions for long periods of time will make it even easier to have solid aged smokes for later.

It will be about 32 cubic feet, made from 3/4" furniture grade MDF that I will veneer. I'll line it with sapele or spanish cedar, and make the drawers out of a combination of mahogany and spanish cedar. Outside dimensions are 48" wide x 48" tall x 24" deep. Let's hope this will sustain the collection for a little while.

First legitimate excuse to buy cigars: wife = pregnant

Evening \ Morning all

Wifey is spreading the news all over the interwebs, so I thought I'd share the news with you all- I have managed to fulfil my duties as a man and take the first step into fatherhood - my lovely wife is pregnant!

It is still pretty early on, almost 10 weeks, but we are both so excited we decided to spread the news a little early. Plus I have a few of the Sydney FoH crew on my Facebook so they're sure to see it if I didn't post here myself

At 27 it's all pretty new to me- we've been married for 2.5yrs and have only just bought our first home- but none the less I am very excited to be on the path to which I am headed.

Though I am sure it means there will be less cash to splurge on CC, it *does* provide me with one final legitimate reason to buy a box or 10 to pass out to friends and family (plus I've managed to stockpile enough of Prez's specials to see me through for a little while )

As a relatively new member here I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone here for being so welcoming to your forum, to the C*UNTA crew (and especially the Sydney Figurados) for the good times had so far, and look forward to many more laughs and stories along the way.

2012 Poker Tournament Rounds

I did the best I could

We have 2 reserve players for most of the rounds. If you are a reserve you are 99% likely to get a game.

I really want to let our European members take part. Time differential is a killer however lets try it. If i can get 8 European players to play (nominate on this thread) then we will get it done. Check the time on the Spreadsheet.

Now we will likely have 12 finalists. I will split the final into 2 games of 6 players. Winner of each round into the end of year final and a $200 cigar credit (each).

Lets see how it works.
From that point the rules are:

Each registered player is to look at the tournament schedule and advise if they can make it. Let me give you a hint....make it. If you need to be moved to a different day e-mail me czar01@clubczar.com and I will do my best to accommodate.

The times are unchangeable.

Each day of the tournament you are nominated for, there will be a PM to you as a reminder. Proceed to the Poker room 10 minutes before game time. I will confirm you are there through the poker room SHOUTBOX. DO NOT SIT AT THE TABLE UNTIL I CALL YOU TO DO SO.

Late arrivals will be ruled out. There are no second chances. Sorry Gentlemen, we are working with unsympathetic software.

It is up to you to make allowances for time differentials. We are working on NY time and Brisbane time. Go to World clock etc to ensure you know when the game will start and try to be on the forum 30 minutes prior.

I will advise all participants of who is in the final

Good Luck to all competitors!
Hi Rob,

Yes, Guy's condition slowlybut surely improves.

He was never paralyzed. He hada seizure on April 22nd which terrified us. We thought he was going to be paralyzed but it didn't happen.

The heparin treatment is stopped and replaced, which is a good sign. He is stabilizing. We were told that his recovery will be will be long and tedious!

When Guy talks, he is not able to speak full sentences but few words as he has difficulty articulating.

About the doctors and the hospital, he is in the best in the region. It's a University hospital specialized in head and neck. It's the reason why Nimes' Hospital transferred him there from day one. If an operation was necessary, they had the required staff and material. Montpellier has a top Medical School.
My family and I are touched by the sympathy messages I receive. It brings warmth to my heart.
I'm thinking of ordering some cigars online but I don't want to waste my time and money by ordering fakes.
Anyone in Greece?

Do you guys really want to exit the Euro and welcome back the Drachma? I guess your recent election results indicate the rejection of austerity and the terms of the loan deal so either it is a game of double bluff gone wrong (mistaken belief of the limitless generosity of the German taxpayer) or most actually want out? Isn't this the choice unless there is a "have your cake and eat it" trick which I have missed? I just don't get it.

On the otherhand if membership is not sustainable perhaps default and exit and devaluation could help Greece regain competitiveness and spur growth. That is if the country doesn't implode from all of the ensuing chaos. I sincerely hope not There's no schadenfreude here, just sadness.

Worrying times for all.

P.S. Mods feel free to do what you like with this, no offence intended, just serious concern.

New Coolidor project

Hi from beautiful Bulgaria. This is my first post, but I've been reading treads here for few years now.
After reading most of the topics about wine cooler humidors I recently decided to build one!
I bought a 35 bt. compressor style wine cooler and I order some Spanish cedar from Germany that arrived the other day. I bought 2pounds of humidity beads and a 20" by 20" humidity sheet.
I have few questions for those of you that have build and used this kind of units:
How do you glue the cedar to the sides of the fridge?
I was thinking about putting cat litter in and around the drain hole! Is that a good idea?
I am going to make a cedar grid covered with humidity sheet that I will place in front of the cooling coil!???
I am going to put 2 fans at the bottom and I will place the beads all over the unit. I could put a fan that blows right at the cooling coil???
I would appreciate any advices and opinions I will show pics once I start to build it(probably this weekend)!

I know there probably a few car enthusiasts on the forum and I'm looking for some advice re paint protection. I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience using a product called Opti-Guard? (consumer grade version is called Opti-Coat)

It's a ceramic clear coat, similar to the one Merc use, that has a "life time" guarantee. I'm a little sceptical (okay, that's a lie, I'm really sceptical) about the guarantee, but there's no caveats like having yearly inspections or using their products to wash the car to avoid voiding the warranty. Reviews I've read seem to be pretty positive, but I'd like to get the straight skinny from my fellow BOTL.

Signing on from Vegas

Hey everyone, I'm new member here, but a aged member on a couple different boards, was told about this site from Backslide, so I figured why not stop by and make a couple of new friends.

I'm a 21 year old private chef (21 as of June), currently residing in Colorado, just finished my degree in Culinary Arts, and will be back home in a couple of weeks. I'm a huge cigar fan, and I am huge supporter of pairing fine cigars, with exceptional food and fine spirits. I'm a huge H. Upmann fan, the Mag 48 EL 2009 being my absolute favorite, and I'm still in the hunt for Half Coronas and when they come out Mag 50 EL 2012. I'm excited to meet new friends and mingle with fellow cigar lovers.

I'm known on other boards for helping with recipes and health care. I diddle a little with custom computers, and love salt water fish tanks as well as my two kids, a 9 month old Rottweiler/Pitbull and a 5 month old Black Lab/Boxer. If you have any questions or feel like saying hi, feel free, I welcome it.

Thank you everyone,

Whether you nailed it or not, the process of doing a blind tasting is always fun. when you go back to read your notes, compare them to the notes/reviews of those who nailed it. You will find that they are not too different!

I won't even go int the PM's which had this cigar as one of the final 2 considerations...only to go with the other. Well done for getting so close.

This cigar certainly has an element of Cohiba Grassiness. Creamy aspects of the HDM Epicure 1? Touch of a Punch Punch earth/leather.

But its not
