Campanas

Campanas (3/5)

  1. I’ve noticed a trend of peaty whiskies that have been aged in Sherry casks like this one. From the ones I’ve tried the smoky sweet flavors really go well with a cigar.
  2. You should go. The wines we tasted there were amazing.
  3. We were very lucky throughout our whole trip. We missed all the record high temps except for our 1st day in Melbourne when it hit 42c. The rest of the time the daytime temp was between 20c to 29c. Doubt you know him Ken. He’s a friend of mine from Belgium (but based in HK) called Raphael. Vue de Monde we knew and planned for but The Prince of Wales was a happy accident. We flew straight up to the Sunshine Coast from Melbourne. Only drove down to Brisbane to catch our flight back to Singapore. Should I have come and called in on you? ?
  4. Next stop was Melbourne where we had a lovely dinner at Vue de Monde (arguably one of the best restaurants in Melbourne). The stand-out for me was the Soufflé which was the best I’ve ever had and we were given a tour of the kitchen at the end of the evening. Whilst in Melbourne we had lunch in St. Kilda’s where I had an excellent yellow fish curry at the Prince of Wales hotel. Last stop was Coolum Beach where I had a nice smoke at the local Surf Club and we celebrated a friend’s 40th birthday party.
  5. Just got back from a 3 week trip to OZ over Christmas and the New Year. Started the trip in Adelaide where we did a lot of wine tasting in McLaren Vale and Barossa. We then drove to Coonawarra where you can do the winery equivalent of a pub crawl! We also drove to the Blue Lake near Coonawarra where between Dec and March the water turns a bright blue. Next stop was the Aussie version of the Grampians.. Then onto Port Fairy where to my utter amazement, I found a restaurant doing Malaysian street food! Next leg was driving along the Great Ocean Road to Melbourne. Most of the scenic stops was not too crowded except for the last stop at the Twelve Apostles where it was toss up between the flies and tourists as to which were more numerous.
  6. Will be in the UK in March to attend my sister-in-law’s graduation (she just completed a Masters in Theology) then UK again in July/August for my son’s graduation from Warwick University where he’s doing a Bachelors in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.
  7. My rather simplistic of global politics is that ever increasing income inequality has created the craziness we are currently seeing. The rich have so much money that they don’t know what to do with it. Private equity, family offices, etc. are throwing money at even marginal investment opportunities. On the other hand we have a deluge of economic migrants and people struggling to make ends meet. Even in so called communist China the ranks of the super rich continue to grow in leaps and bounds. Brexit was caused by the have nots mistakenly blaming the EU for their woes and ironically voting in the same politicians who caused the income inequality that led them to vote for Brexit in the first place.
  8. After the great weekend in Phuket, back to work and reality ?
  9. Up in Phuket for a long weekend with the Missus and the in-laws. View from our villa
  10. Working in a Port I see many ships but this one is a bit special. It’s a state of the art drill ship that can drill oil wells at depths of up to 3,600 meters and not move more than 1cm from it’s designated position. Had a 2 hour tour of the ship and came away mightily impressed.
  11. It’s a long weekend here in Singapore + the missus is heading off to Phuket on Sunday for a week long detox retreat = lots of cigars! ?
  12. Toyota MR2 Mk1. I used to own one back in 1989/90 when I was living in London. Sold it when I moved to Singapore and still kicking myself about it. Best handling car I’ve ever driven. Light, mid-engined and no power steering to dilute feedback through the wheel; it was the epitome of seat of the pants driving feel.
