White dots

Recommended Posts

Being new to smoking, I have noticed this only a few times. Does anyone know as the cigar burns, what those little white dots are that appear on the ash? I wish I had some photos to post, but I've seen it maybe a handful of times.

Do they look more like tiny white bubbles? I believe that's symptomatic of a high mineral content (maybe magnesium?) in the soil.

That's exactly what it looked like. I do remember enjoying the smoke as well. Not at all off-putting.

I think most folks agree that 'tooth' on a cigar wrapper derives from the mineral composition of the terroir. That said, what mineral causes the tooth (Mg!?!) is up for some debate. Either way, I'm going with mineral deposits; final answer.

I've had a fair few, CC and NC, with the magic lucky dots. Usually quite good smokes at that.

Don't know what they are or why they're there but do like to see them.

To echo another user on here, I understood it to be an extra amount of magnesium in the soil of the leaf, though can't point to a scientific source for that. I'd echo Habana Mike in that most smokes I've experienced this with have been delicious. Most prominent for me is RoMa Craft Tobac's Intemperance BA XXI Intrigue/A.W.S. - excellent cigars.

You can see the precursor tooth on the wrapper pretty well....
