Playa del Carmen (Mexico) info?

Recommended Posts

I'm off to spend two weeks in Playa del Carmen in May, staying at Riu Tequila, very excited!

I know there's a LCDH and Rushman has a shop in Playa del Carmen, but I was just wondering if anyone could give me any more indepth info (and advice) on cigar shops and bars in Playa del Carmen?

I know its heresy, but I would suggest bringing your own. You have an allowance of 25 sticks to bring in duty free.

Cigars are expensive there and more importantly the selection while generally decent is highly focused to what sells to generally non-smokers - i.e. you won't find something on your wish list in PDC.

Having said that, several good shops to check out include LCDH which is small but nice. I haven't seen the new Casa Portages since they had to relocate due to redevelopment, but their old shop had the best selection in PDC.

If you end up spending any time in Cancun, go see the LCDH there, very nice.

My brother in law Arturo is running our shops. Our small old one is right next to Yo Amo Tacos at 5th and Constituyentes, The newer shop that has a few chairs and couch to hang out and smoke if you have the time is one block closer to the ocean on 1st, just across from the Royal Hotel and next to the sex toy shop.

Have fun in my old stomping grounds. I was there for 10 days last month but that was the first trip in almost 1.5 years.

Thanks for the replies and advise guys! Was planning to take my own sticks primarily and just pick up a couple of singles. I guess it's a long shot, but is there any hope of coming across any Edmundo Dantes anymore?

My Son-in-Law saw them online at the LCDH for $45 usd.

I am always surprised when I go to Playa at how little to nothing the vendors know about great Cuban Tobacco.

There are so many cigar aficionados that go to Playa from all over the world for the weather and the vibe,

just praying to have the opportunity to smoke the best Cuban cigars. Yet for the last 25 years, the fear

has always been authenticity... and now, price.

If I had a shop in or near Playa, I'd sell knowledge, service, authenticity and a great place to smoke. Then I'd have a place downwind where I'd sell ice cold drinks and a great place to sit and smoke. Just my fantasy...

The fantasy can be reality .

Next time check in with Rushman and his Incredible wife. Full of knowlege and a new shop with a smoking lounge.

Rush isn't there right now but Laura has much knowledge and Love for our hobby.

And service- After the first 5 minute of stopping by their shop I felt like part of the family.

Thought I'd give a bit of feedback, have been back a couple weeks but have been rather busy. We had a lovely time in Playa Del Carmen, great place!

In terms of cigars, I dipped into most of the many cigar shops scattered down the long strip, most had badly stored sticks and just seemed aimed at tourists (also a lot of fakes). The two better ones were the LCDH and Casa Partagas, both had some interesting aged and LE stock and also, both actually had a few boxes of Conde 54s, so picked up a single to try!

@Dino81 &@MattW

Did you guys find any sticks in Duty Free (assuming you flew out of Cancun)?

I was there a few months ago and remember seeing a cabinet with boxes, but didn't stop and have a good look.

My dad is heading there in September and I'm hoping he can pick me some CC up duty free.

Cheers

I visited LCDH Cancun and here are my thoughts.

Very nice place with somewhat friendly people. The lady staff I spoke to was not knowledgeable about cigars enough to sale it to tourist ymmv. The humidor was off a good size and plenty of vintage and normal sticks, the price now was shocking to me I would call it the “double prices plus” again was explained they have a high tax on CC. I ended up just walking out walking out with 5 sticks and amongst those 5 was a fake cohiba siglo 6 (blaming the wife she rushed me out of there) if u look at the head it bleeds over to the white part and the top halograms are shorter than the bottom one. I’m headed back there today to see if they will correct this. All in all nice place to get a stick but not to stock up in my opinion.
