Not having the opportunity to fly Quantas, my experiences are limited to United and they too have their fair share of incidences that makes me wonder if they know what they're doing.
I do recall one flight back to Chicago with some bad weather along the way. Still at the gate, prior to take off the pilot announced that we would have to detour around the storm, about an extra hours flight time, and would need to delay take off so we could take on extra fuel. Once on our way ATC determined the storm was dissipating and we could now fly direct, only problem being the plane, with the extra fuel, would be too heavy to land. No problem, we decended to fly at a lower altitude and burn up some of the fuel. But wait a minute, there was a back log of planes now trying to land in Chicago and we would have to be put in a holding pattern. Damn, sure wish we didn't burn up that extra fuel. So back to a higher altitude and spent 15 minutes doing big circles in the sky over Indiana before we needed to go to plan "C", divert to another airport or risk running out of fuel. I'm not sure what the pilot did or said to get us down, but all's well that ends well I guess and we made it in one piece.
Can't beat the fun of flying!
