NOT a generic tasting EL release, and aside from a self extinguishing part at the end of the 2nd, it was a treat. This one gave me a definite floral/soapy taste in the retrohale for the first 2/3rds, but it only caught me off guard as I haven't had this from anything so fresh before. Given that this one was boxed only 3 months ago, I am a fan. 1st; Power, pepper, spice, w/oak & leather Retro had cedar & mild soapy floral (like the good old Thrills gum) 2nd; leather, oak, nuts, & pepper & power Retro had less soapyness but light tannins, nuts, toasted tobacco, and lingering pepper. Final; NUBBED! While I will stay true to my first impressions, it seems a few of my trusted friends feel this one falls flat. I wish they had the same example as I. rickmccarey Posted October 16, 2014 Share Posted October 16, 2014 Rye I've only had that floral/soapy taste on a few cigars. Usually I figured it was because of bad blending or in a sick period. It's not a pleasant taste as it's over powered the cigars making them unsmokable. You think this was the case on this one? The leaf is one of a bundle of 5yr aged (when I got it 2 years ago) wrapper leaf from the Robaina farm that a good friend gave me when I mentioned my intentions for the project. Now when one of the rollers was in town, I couldn't resist the urge to have him roll me a few with my own wrapper. He was very impressed to see such good leaf when I pulled it out, and I was commended for keeping it in perfect rolling condition. Anyway, to get back on track, I had some leftover tempered glass measuring 12"x24" and I really wanted to build a wall hanging with a backlight to showcase the sheer beauty of a perfectly grown, fermented & aged leaf, so I pressed it for a couple months between wood and then placed it on the glass. Keeping the edges spread and the wrinkles from overlapping proved to be a very tedious task, and then it seemed that every single spec of dust in Canada wanted to settle on the glass just as I was trying to place the top piece. To this day, being the perfectionist that I am with myself, it is incomplete, and I have since noticed flaws in the glass itself as well as the damned dust that seems to multiply on a daily basis. It now sits unfinished in my shop/smoking lounge just to the right of my favorite smoking chair, raised on 4 hockey pucks above one of my benches, with a counter light underneath it to create effect for my pics, and two old speaker grills as the back drops. To some, my setups for my pics (so many pics!) seems "contrived" but really, it was just a natural turn of events in the chaos that is my shop. I would make an excellent retiree, but sadly for me, that's not even a word in my vocabulary any time in the foreseeable future. I swear, if a fortune fell upon me, I would have a well set up, but messy shop and turn out pieces for all my friends, but for now, it's a long slow process. Settling for a good cigar and appropriate pairing after a long hard day is my "zen" or meditation if you will, and although it may look to others as chaos, or a mess, I laugh when I get told that I spend too much time setting up a pic. It happens very naturally and it's my way of portraying my mental state of bliss while partaking in my favorite pastime and sharing that feeling with others that are willing to spend a few seconds of their time looking at it. Any similarities to any regular production Partagas?I really liked the C3 as well, but this was nothing like it. More like the back half of a good Lusi only with more power right from the start.
