  1. IMG_4298.MOV My favorite bite of beef was a piece of lightly seared wagyu nigiri. Melt in your mouth beef flavor explosion. It was the highlight of one of the most expensive omakase meals I’ve ever had but would definitely spring for it again! IMG_4298.MOV
  2. You should buy no more than one drawer, and one shelf. I started with a 28-bottle and went with three shelves and theee drawers. Quickly learned the drawers take up precious space. I bought an identical 28-bottle from Craigslist just so I could use the shelves and drawers. So now I have one with 2 drawers for singles and one shelf, and the other has 2 shelves. Also have two coolers, but the extra drawer sits unused. Heres a pic of the two-shelf one from a few years ago. You get good at Tetris...

  4. Shelly’s is ok. Decent food. If you like whisk(e)y Jack Rose is a must go. It is a Mecca of the water of life. Also cigar friendly on the top floor. Serves food too but I’ve never had.
  5. GTS at $800/bottle ??! I’ve got a few I’d love to unload at that price lol. Noah’s Mill is the dark horse on that list. One of my fav’s and a bargain consider the pricing.

  7. PL Pantelas for those with little to no experience. They get to smoke a mild Cuban with the classic twang and it doesn’t bother me if they pitch it after 2 puffs. More experienced smokers get what I’m smoking or their pick of regular production.

By chemical analysis do you mean atomic composition (e.g. C, O, inorganics, etc and composition thereof, commonly done by emission spectroscopy ) or molecular structure (e.g. C-O vs. C=O vs O-C=O, etc, commonly done by absorption spectroscopy)? Since the mold/plume are both organic, molecular structure will probably be more insightful, but there is a wide spectrum of absorption techniques that vary greatly in price.
  12. This one I’d do blind - literally. Blindfold the tasters so they cannot see the color of the wrapper as visual cues often precondition our expectations. Sensory deprivation also heightens the un-deprived senses so the tasters can really focus on the taste, aroma, and mouthfeel of the cigar. Have non-smoking attendees help by taking pictures and replenishing drinks (water or seltzer to not skew taste), obviously. Of course taking notes might be hard blindfolded, but the average smartphone is great at dictation (the technophobes can use a tape recorder). If you want to prevent groupthink or sheep mentality, hand out different shades to different tasters (a pseudo double blind) and have the tasters rate each cigar and guess what wrapper shade he/she had on each day. This sounds incredibly fun, actually. How about a 3-pack (one of each shade) of the Puntilla if you use this suggestion so I can run it with the group too, prez?
  13. I would add an objective measurement in addition to subjective tasting. If you can find an accurate scientific scale (out to 0.00001 grams or so) weigh each identical cigar right out of the mastercase, sans label (to remove any moisture uptake of the label). Place into your humidified storage for the standard 30 days. Weigh each cigar again after storage to document humidity intake for each cigar. Place cigar into respective control environments for a set time. Weigh again just prior to smoking to document weight change from dry boxing. Smoke, rate on scale of 80-100 (let’s be honest, you don’t want to do this experiment with a cigar that’s going to rate less than 80 to begin with). Repeat with other storage conditions. I’d do this with at least a 5-person tasting panel. 5 cigars per condition x 5 conditions = one box or cab and you’ll get a decent amount of data. Then you can plot the ratings vs. moisture change (in weight) and see if there is any trends. You could get quite a bit of data (moisture uptake with time if you measure at regular intervals during storage, moisture loss with each dry box condition, variance of ROTT weight vs humidified weight, etc.). If you wanted to be really controlled, the weight measurement should take place in a controlled environment (but immediately upon removal from drybox/storage to prevent unintended uptake), and with minimal exposure to non-controlled environment after removal. This of course assumes moisture uptake will be more than 0.00001 grams.

The Connie 1 I had ROTT and made me ecstatic that the 3 blind boxes all had the same codes and were PSP quality.
  15. I used to be exclusively a Punch with the straight cut for figurados. Now I’m 99% V-cut (Colibri gives the deepest, cleanest cut) as it’s foolproof, razor sharp, and perfect every time, with the 1% being punch.
  16. Having 8 of the top 10 (missing the Tubos) and 10 of the 14 posted (missing the presidentes and E2), it’s nice to know I’ll have some beauties to smoke in a couple years!
