PINAR DEL RIO, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) - At the age of 70, Rogelio Ortúzar has long been the best tobacco grower in Pinar del Río, the westernmost of the Cuban provinces and cradle of the best leaves with that the famous cigars are made.

On his farm, in the community of Puerta de Golpe, about 22 kilometers from the capital city of the province, Ortúzar achieved a yield of 1.87 tons of leaf per hectare, the highest in the territory that produces almost 70 percent of Cuban premium tobacco.

His dedication to the hard work of the field earned him to be declared by the Cuban state as a National Labor Hero in 2015, the same year he was proclaimed as a Habano Man, an annual distinction that is delivered at the Havana's festivals held in Cuba.

"There are many factors for the success of the harvest, but one of them, which is fundamental, is the quality of the seed," he told Xinhua while touring his seedbeds with Virginio Morales, another Habano Man, but of the year 2018.

Both men, who are deep connoisseurs of the planting and processing of solanum, have an intimate friendship, founded precisely on what they call "tobacco culture" on the island.

Ortúzar was born on the farm he runs today and was founded by his Spanish grandfather in 1927, and then continued by his father.

Now it cultivates in 67 hectares, the limit allowed by Cuban law to avoid large estates, where besides tobacco, which is the main crop, it has 20 hectares of beans and 27 hectares of rice.

The areas dedicated to tobacco and beans are alternated each season with the sowing of corn, although it maintains small cassava (cassava) crops for self-consumption.

"You also have to respect the times of planting strictly, because each crop has its moment and you have to make each plant what it takes every day," he added as one who confesses a great secret.

For more than 20 years, Ortúzar directed the "Cooperativa 26 de Julio", which is the largest in the country with 647 members, who work on more than 3,000 hectares and generate about 80 million pesos (equal to the dollar at the official exchange rate) in agricultural productions that sell to the state.

Serious health problems caused him to abandon the direction of the cooperative, which Gilberto Izquierdo now chairs, who considered Ortúzar as a wise advisor with whom he consults many of the decisions.

Under the direction of Ortúzar, the cooperative built with its resources three primary schools, a pharmacy and a family doctor's office, works that revived the community and that everyone is grateful for today.

This cigar maker, who studied until grade 12 and stayed at the gates of his dream of being an engineer, lives with his wife Ursula, his partner of almost 50 years of marriage and mother of their two children, and whom he regards as an important support in their agricultural work.

Ursula is an affable woman who is aware not only of her husband's words, but of her medications and even of the clothes she wears.

"She has been essential," Ortúzar said with a laugh, while Ursula approaches and hugs him with love.

Ortúzar is still aware of what is done on the farm because, he said, you have to have love for the land and that is the only secret of the Cuban tobacco crop.

  2.

How have the class of 2014 performed?

    Two questions actually

    1. How have 2014 cigars performed in general

    2. How have the three 2014 LE cigars evolved in terms of flavour. In your opinion, which has been the standout cigar?

    •  Cohiba Robusto Supremo
    • Bolivar Super Corona
    • Partagás Seleccíon Privada Edición Limitada

    3. Which of the above has performed best on the secondary market?

More importantly, 5 years down and we should by now be able to assess how 2014  was in general for Cuban cigare.

Let us know your thoughts and where it stands in your mind. If you have a favourite 2014 cigar, call it out .

Can you open all your boxes in Cuba and check them with out any issues leaving. I thought it had to be sealed boxes leaving with invoices? Thanks

Some days you can cherry pick from a few boxes.  Some places are more agreeable to it than others. If they know you, it generally isn't a problem.  I haven't been aware of my crew ever being stopped at the airport on the way out because the seal had been sliced. It is pretty hard to tell.
