    Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern

I like them both (Bourdain and Zimmern). I really liked the Bourdain episode in Lebanon where he had to be evacuated when things got hairy. Thought that real life drama made the episode more exciting than most. He had an interesting observation about the macaroni and cheese he was served on the US naval ship at the end. Ramsey seems a tosser. Tosser, indeed. This is the first time I've used the word 'tosser' (I'm a Yank, of course). Hope it's not misapplied.

Is this a good or bad habit?

In the interest of full disclosure I should reveal that I am a physician. Nothing wrong with an afternoon siesta. Just consider two things: First, too much sleep during the day can interrupt the normal sleep/wake cycle resulting in poor sleep at night. Second, you may be napping BECAUSE you have poor sleep at night. This could have many causes including sleep apnea, frequent urination (due to an enlarged prostate), chronic pain, excess caffine intake, stress, etc. Having said that I had a short nap this afternoon that really helped. Would have been better if it had followed a good screw!

I have had an "Effing" gut full

The hatred for all things tobacco is now a firmly held principle of the left. Combine this with their love of governmental activism and you get what you've now got. We vote lefties in because we're sure they love children, whales, sex, fairness, and peace. What we get is the realization of ALL of the leftist agenda backed by the full force of government power. Hate right wingers, their guns, their religion, their selfishness? Are conservatives uncool hypocrites who talk about individual rights and private property to cover for their racist corporate greed? Vote liberal then. If you do then my advice is 'smoke 'em while you've got 'em!' Naturally, Ray's got my vote!

I have had an "Effing" gut full

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. -- C. S. Lewis
  6. Happy birthday, Ray! Let's hope that a year from today we'll have something else to celebrate Right wing? You always seem right up the middle to me!
  7. Take good care of yourself, Lisa. You will be in my prayers. Also congratulations! if a boy I suggest the name Romeo. If a girl then Julieta. Seems common sense to me.
  8. Ken, Secular Progressives (e.g. Liberals) are not big on God but they do have religion. Political correctness is how they express their piety. Now, when you get a bunch of 'em together they will invariably try to out do one another. Each wishes to show he/she is more devout than the other. The result is a silly upward spiral of idiocy. Look around the world. Everywhere there is a collection of self affirming lefties you see this phenomenon. Every large city in the US is a spectacular example. Unfortunately, it is up to the electorate to check the excesses. I'm afraid the voters, particularly urban voters, aren't up to the job. Why? 'cause they're libs too! When liberals complain about the result of liberalism I am saddened. There should be a help line set up.

    First cigars now this...?

Be quiet! Put out that cigar! Eat this salad! Your car's too big! Hand over that gun! Yes, the control freaks are out there thinking up new rules for you and for me. All for our own good, you understand. Oh, and they need more tax money to keep bringing you good government.

    Fighting for cigar rights

It is evident to me that in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and even in the US there is a movement among some to ban tobacco in all its forms. It reminds me a little of Prohibition in the US many years ago. It is human nature to want to control people who won't behave themselves. That tendency has popular appeal when it is presented as being for their own good. The fact is most people don't smoke. Even fewer smoke premium cigars. Therefore the public at large doesn't give a rats ass about our plight. Non smokers probably celebrate each intrusion into our freedom to do as we please. The politicians and the bureaucrats feel a post-orgasmic afterglow with the adoption of each new regulation. Even the stereotypic image of the cigar smoker fuels the process. Why, cigar smokers are wealthy, white, rich, corpulent males who have raped the worlds poor. I cannot imagine a more reviled character. What great fodder for the politico! You see, cigar smokers fit into the current western political farytale very well - as the villain! If we have bought into this political fantasy all these years we have only ourselves to blame. We have supported it with our votes, our contributions, and our tolerance of its excesses. Don't be surprised that the regulatory beast has turned on you - you've fed and nurtured it all these years. What to do? The above referenced article is good. It's the place to begin. The fallback position is to go underground and wait a generation or two for the political winds to shift. I have to admit I am angry. I am angry at the control freaks in our respective governments. I am angry with each lost liberty - even if it is your liberty that is lost. I am angry at those who do not see the dangers of government power and the necessity to check, control, and limit it whenever possible and in every way. Lastly I am angry at those who don't understand that we must protect each others rights, liberties, freedoms, and property. These things are essential virtues, people, not sins.
  11. Congratulations!! I'll guess you had a Davidoff 80th Anniversario but whatever it was I hope it was spectacular! All the best!

    Smoking alone...what to do?

I almost always smoke alone. There are two reasons for this; first, except for the guys at the local cigar shop, my friends don't smoke. Second, I focus on the aroma, taste, and burn of my cigar. I will listen to music (prefer jazz for this - not sure why) or talk radio (often too aggravating) and think but much of my focus is on the cigar. In the winter I sit in my warmed up truck. In warm weather I sit on the porch (live on a farm - very quiet and peaceful) with my dogs. Prefer coffee or port.

    TP Poll

I thought it was overhand above the equator and underhand below - something to do with the direction of toilet swirl. BTW I'll only have two ply, scented, embossed, and flower printed TP for my butt. None of this 'green' TP. Makes my ass bleed.
