there is such a ridiculous anti-cigar movement on television these days (i have no problem with the anti-cigarette lobby but they have dragged cigars into the whole morass and the cigar producers have stood back and allowed it - they need to distinguish themselves), that it was nice to see something a little PI the other day. had that 'las vegas' show on in the background and saw a moment when tom selleck, who apparently now owns the casino, was smoking in a meeting.

someone pulls him up and says basically, 'ah, you smoking in here'.

he just looks at them and says, 'yes, and it is a really good one'.

nice for a change. couldn't see what he was smoking but did see him with monte 2's on another occasion.

they repeated the old magnums again recently out here. what a great show.

there was actually a las vegas episode where two high rollers that were great mates of selleck's character turn up for the annual high stakes poker game - TC and rick. they kept waiting for their british mate to show but he never did. wonder if higgins is still with us.

agreed but the problem is that when they have areas for smoking, they stink of cigarettes.

had quite a few hours stopover in the qantas club in santiago a few years back and i'd saved a boli gigantes for an opportunity on the trip home. it is a great little club and has a smoking area down one end, or did. i'd waited till it had emptied of all the cigarette smokers and settled in with a book and a glass of champers and lit up. they stopped me. cigarettes were fine but they were not having those filthy cigars in a smoking area.

fair to say that they no longer thought of me as that nice aussie after the discussion on that but i still couldn't smoke my boli. they may have let me if i was tom.

This is where the US gets it right. Couldn't have a cuban, but after work tonight I took a cab into town and smoked an Oliva Serie V (ok, not good but ok) indoors, in the company of other chaps who were all interested in cigars. It was almost enough to overcome the fact that the cigar was just average. I'll be going back again tomorrow, to smoke another average cigar indoors.

Selleck is a cigar smoker.

He certainly is and it seems his favourite is a Monte 2.

Tom Selleck is a legend and seems like a top bloke.

Here is a small excerpt from his interview in Cigar Afficionado:

"Most of the time I smoke Havanas," he says. "Hoyo de Monterrey double coronas, Punch double coronas. I haven't had a Ramon Allones Gigantes. Those are really coveted because they're so hard to get. Cohiba Robusto is the only Cohiba I like. I find the others overrated; they're all overpriced." But he adds, "I have enough Havana cigars. It's kind of neat being a celebrity--a lot of people find out that you like cigars and give them to you. To me, Cuban cigars won't be as much fun when they're not contraband."

Selleck has also been enjoying more and more non-Cuban cigars. "The domestic cigars keep getting better and better," he says. "I'm smoking a lot of La Gloria Cubanas from Miami--when I can get them. The La Gloria Cubana Wavell is a sensational smoke. But because they're so highly rated in Cigar Aficionado, they have become almost impossible to get. I also love Davidoffs. I know they're expensive, but Davidoff Special R's are just excellent. The Special T's are very good, and they're a classic shape. Their Double R's are also consistently high in quality. The Davidoffs are just made so well. And I'm finding that with almost all of the Havana cigars there are a lot of inconsistencies. You're going to get some duds in every box, which is sad. I know the problems, without getting into the politics of Castro; there are huge problems with supply and demand, and the large demand affects the quality control."

When it comes to his favorite, however, Havana wins, with the Montecristo No. 2, a figurado. "I'd rather hold a Monte No. 2 than any cigar," he says. "I just love its shape."

I remember watching a James Bond movie once, with either with Dalton or Brosnan playing Bond, can't remember which, and in one scene he lites up a cigarette in a darkened room and starts talking to one of those sexy Bond girls. I remember thinking that it would have been so much more appropriate to the character if he was portrayed as a cigar smoker instead.

I watched through 5 seasons of Boston Legal to try and work out which cigar it was that they were smoking. Finally got it towards the end of the 5th Season when Allen and Denny Crane go away for a camping holiday. At one point you see Allen shove a davidoff box in to his saddlebags.

I may have yelled, "boom gotcha!" at that moment.

i'm embarassed to say that years ago i saw dirty dancing vol 2 - havana nights, i think. there is a shot early in the film where the father of the girl who enters the comp is smoking a cigar - no big deal being havana (or allegedly - i saw nothing familar). however, and it was a very quick glance so i may have been wrong but it sure looked like it, it appeared to be a limited edition (i forget which - a pyramid, i think). given that this part of the film was set in late 1958, i thought that perhaps premature.
