Thought that I would start this off for the new year. Good to see what people's favorite or current libation is. Tonight, The Balvenie Portwood 21...

I'm feeling better today,  Not as dark, tense, and angry as I have been the past several days. Today was better. Chores around the house, building a new humidor, repaired a door frame, and just being

How was it - worth the hype?

I have had this before but wanted to re-visit it. While I think there are some good flavors lurking in the background, I think it is too over oaked. On a side note for what that bottle costs I think it should have been released at cask strength. To me it is in the try it somewhere, but don't buy the bottle category.

Cheers

Great malt. If you can find an older bottling, buy it. There is a world of difference.

I can second that as I tried the older and newer almost back to back. The older one is very different in taste.

That's what I heard too but have not drunk enough through the years to know for sure.

Reading about the changes, Ardbeg ran out of their old sherry cask stocks around 2010. So the bottlings dated after 2010 are quite different.

I tried the current bottling of Uigeadail, probably 2014. It was good- very peaty and smokey, had some sherry in the finish. Ultimately, it was a bit thin, needed more sherry to be well balanced.

I then found several bottles of Uigeadail from 2003 and 2004. Wow. What a difference! The 2004 bottling had a ton more sherry influence, was sweeter, had a heavier body and overall was a much more complete malt. The old bottling stood up to its reputation.

Finished off my work trip to Chengdu with the usual big dinner with my Chinese colleagues and they presented this to us. My eyes lit up...anyways we took it back to the room and finished it off. Really nice stuff 76b226974bc0d303ccac625ee46e90c5.jpg

Would love to get my hands on an older bottling, I heard they were using older whisky in the vatting of the older bottlings (pre 2007 if not mistaken?). Chances are small I'll come across one of these older bottles though, but nevermind I really enjoy the newer bottlings as well.

2009 or earlier. 2010 is suspect, 2011 is definitely not the same as the older stuff.

After going to the whisky show in Sydney.. I got these c49e650e37ab5103eb4e0df848bba7a2.jpg

Extremely surprised by the Taiwanese single malt

I picked up the 2015 World Whiskies Award Single Malt winner, the Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique recently (it's very hard to find at the moment) but the Sherry Cask is also good to try from what I've been recommended.

They had all of them for sale at the show today

A pretty epic night of drinking with friends. We all got together and brought some great bottles out of our collections, and poured micro pours in order to try everything. We even made a cocktail at the end.

Drinking at Jack Rose in DC- largest whisky selection in North America.

Started with E.H. Taylor Cured Oak, currently drinking Willett Family Estate 21 yr C13D "Red Eye." The WFE is spectacularly good bourbon that I suspect is wheated (don't remember exactly). Much better than Pappy 20 or 23. Much, much better. One of the best I've ever tasted.

Last nights drinks:

I haven't had much Bunnahabhain, if any at all and I am quite taken by its style. It is deliciously light and gentle with plenty of maritime-coastal notes. Just a hint of peat to round it off and to remind that this is still an Islay.

Something to have when you tire of those big bruiser type Islays.

My wife requested a cocktail and since the Black Russian is her favourite I made it for us with a little change...Burnett's Whipped Cream vodka!

After a long day in the yard planting veggies, flowers, mowing, cleaning up it was time for a drink. I thought it was time to break out the Caipirinhas! 640761cc9e160c018331daef69168329.jpg
