I'm a huge horror fan, too. I really love the 80s for horror movies. I agree with everyone's comments about Event Horizon! That one still haunts me. One that I thought was good, although not a really gory, scary movie was Let the Right One In (English version). I thought this was a really well crafted film and story. Also, has anyone ever seen a movie by Rob Zombie? I saw House of A Thousand Corpses and I had no words to describe what I just saw and I still find it hard to talk about it. It's probably the only movie I can say that I don't think I could stomach to watch again...

Since I am a couch potato with a busted ankle, while I work on my computer I have the TV on. I like to watch movies and one of the movie channels is showing newer "horror" flicks this week. I have to say maybe an eight year old, if they try really hard to understand what is going on, might get chills. Other than that, they are just lousy films.

Big horror buff here as well. Been enjoying horror movies since I first saw Friday the 13th, the original, at 5 years old.

I have to agree that in recent years foreign horror has really taken over, particularly French horror. A few great ones to check out are High Tension, Inside and Martyrs. I do caution newcomers however, as these movies are a fair bit more graphic and disturbing than your more traditional American horror. Also, a great British horror flick to check out is The Descent. Excellent!

For a more recent American horror flick check out the Evil Dead remake. It was fantastic! And, for something a little older, but not too old, check out the Canadian horror flick Ginger Snaps. That one is a personal favorite of mine.

Enjoy!

I'll second that! ;) It was great also because I actually have given up on recent Horror flicks so this came as a surprise that it was so good.

Has anyone seen The Conjuring? I heard it's pretty good.

It is meant to be very good, more of a return to old-school horror principles instead of throwing buckets of blood and gratuitious violence at the viewer.

I wouldn't be a huge horror fan and only rarely get to the cinema these days, and if I do it isn't to horror. But I do enjoy dabbling in it. The Omen to me is what it's all about. Generally good horror plays on deeper fears and makes things that on the face of it should not be unsettling very unsettling.

I grew up watching some of the greatest horror flicks of all time loke Alien, The Thing etc. One of my favorites that isn't real popular is Jacobs Ladder from about 1990. For me I was trying to figure out what was going on and finally had it put together for me in the end.

I really have not been truly horrified by any horror film in years. I don't know if it is just getting old.....nope Alien and The Thing still give me the hebie jeebies. I think that CGI has really taken away from horror vs the latex, plastic and buckets of blood special effects from the 70's and 80s.

This one was not real popular but I liked it. 2005 "The Cave"

I watched The Conjuring last night, I was impressed with a horror movie for the first time in probably 20 years. Pretty damn good.

Loved house of 1000 corpses, made no real sense and was over the top.

The original Evil Dead is always a classic, the new one sucked my nuts.

I Agree with the original Changeling, and the exorcist. Both scared me for life.

I'm also a fan of Grind House flicks, over the top blood ect. Hobo with a shotgun for example is an Amazing work of crap. I love it.

Hell raiser was scary as a kid for me and still creeps me out.

Steven kings "It" is ways fun.

Yes, an excellent movie indeed. I think the key to it was great sound effects at the right moment without being 'Obvious' that something was going to occur. Most horror flicks are predictable. I really loved this film.

Forgot about The Thing. That is still a real good movie. IT by King is real good and very true to the book. I haven't seen any of the Evil Dead so I am now going to watch those and the European ones suggested. I used to love the Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street genre. I have been enjoying the possession type ones in Insidious and Paranormal Activity. The Ring and The Grudge kinda freaked me out too. Sinister was quite good. Looking forward to The Conjuring.

I'll third that!

I'd also recommend Wolf Creek, which is not especially gory, but has a persistent threat of menace and implied evil. Another Australian film, Snowtown, is a true crime-horror story that I found extremely hard to watch, but it's excellent.

Haute Tension is an awesome french Film. Martyrs is also good but very hard to watch

I love the Classic Horror films but also delve into the extreme. but recently I have not been able to find any so called "Horror" that is worth watching. Since the release of digital movie cameras Everybody thinks they can make a scary movie but so many of late just Fail.

As a filmmaker Myself I have met many people that try to make the greatest zombie film but fail because they just don't have the heart of the old Masters

Haute Tension is very good, although the title in some english markets was "Switchblade Romance" which is terrible. Also, the final 10 minutes just got too silly for me.

Martyrs, good idea but a little too far down the torture porn road for me.

I'm hearing great things about The Babadook, trying to convince my wife to come see it.

What kind of films do you make?

Martyrs was one that was hard to watch (not as much as a serbian film was)

Films I make are mostly Horror/comedy shorts up till this point. I have just signed up to do the animatronics/ FX supervisor as well as 2nd unit director on a small indie feature

Good fun, but only a pocket money earner at this stage

Also watched Extraterrestrial 2014 movie, was awesome, kinda like cabin in the woods meets Evil Dead, meets Aliens.

Don't worry about reviews, horrors generally get bad reviews but a true horror fan knows that there are gems out there that are often poorly rated, you watch it and wonder who the hell wrote the review. I wouldn't say its academy award winning but it certainly is great.
