Hotel or casas

Recommended Posts

Going to Cuba for first time, whant it to know if to stay in hotel or casas particulares?? Don't care for luxury.. Assoones is confi.

If you are a first timer to Cuba and don't speak Spanish then Hotel.

If you are an argumentative individual, then hotel.

If you like adventure, interacting with locals and taking responsibility for yourself then Casa.

I would definitely do casa, hotels are overrated and not the best bang for your buck.

There are many very nice casas in Havana, first you need to decide where you want to be staying, new or old city and go from there.

My first trip was half and half, the second one was all casas, not just for the money saving (cigar money that is) but for the feel of the land.

You can check out this site:

Sometimes the choice of Casas is dictated by your preference in location as much as anything. The outskirts of Havana aren't as exciting to most as say, Habana Vieja or Vedado, where you can be close to the Partagas factory or the excellent Casa in the Hotel Havana Libre. You can also use the amenities of the hotels like the pool deck of the Parque Central or the Hotel Nacional without being a registered guest so long as you have lots of CUCs.

Enjoy.

Definitely do Casas.

I stayed at 3 different Casas when I went last year. As others have said, you need to research and figure out what area you want to stay in, and then decide the type of Casa you want. You can get a high rise with views, a room in a nice big house, somewhere in the old town area etc.

If you want to meet other travelers, I stayed at this Casa and they have around 10 rooms. Normally Casas can only have 2-3 rooms but this place got an exception. It has a nice roof top deck to relax and have a drink, a nice eating area where you can meet travelers having breakfast etc, good food, nice workers etc. It's in the old town area within walking distance to everything. The negative thing is they don't allow smoking, even up on the roof deck. But, you can stay out smoking in hotel lobbies, restaurants etc and then go home and have a nightcap while reading a book, travel guide etc.

You can email the owners directly to get a "reservation", but keep in mind it's possible you can show up and your room will be taken. This can happen anywhere as money talks. Casa owners have been burned before from people not showing up.

When Colombians speak we say "coja" "to Take or to grab"...I know Mexicans Take it as the f word. Spanish is mutually intelligible but not equally understood by all Spanish speakers.

Dad said "coja la nina y vamonos" .... to say the least that Did not end well in a public place with mostly Mexican people

Casa Particular all the way...

bedincuba.com is one site I have used a few times and always enjoyed the experience.

I do speak spanish but I think that someone that didn't would still have a great time

Hotels are hotels around the world...there aren't too many things like staying in a casa particular so make is part of the cuba trip
