JohnS
The Long Island Iced Tea is an infamous cocktail, much discussed, yet rarely savoured. This is because it has 5 spirits in it, tequila, vodka, light rum, triple sec and gin. There are two stories of its origin. One, that it was invented by Old Man Bishop in the Prohibition Era in the 20's, and perfected by his son, Ransom. Two, that Robert Butt invented it in the 70's at the Oak Beach Inn on Long Island. Perhaps they are both true, because their recipes vary slightly. The recipe I followed is the official International Bartenders Association one... 1.5 cl Gin 1.5 cl Tequila 1.5 cl Vodka 1.5 cl White Rum 1.5 cl Triple sec 3.0 cl Sugar syrup 2.5 cl Lemon juice, fresh 1 dash of Cola Add all ingredients into highball glass filled with ice. Stir gently. Garnish with lemon spiral. Serve with straw. The reason I wanted to try it is because I've had quite a few guests discuss the drink over the years, yet hesitant to request it. A couple of things to consider, firstly, use blanco tequila only. Stir gently sure, but make sure you do so that you get a good mix of citrus and sweet flavours, which is the essence of all good cocktails. Add the cola last, and let it mix into the drink, don't stir after adding the cola. I'll experiment with this drink again in the near future, I'm probably most likely to try the Ransom Bishop recipe below... One fresh lemon half One fresh lime half Squeeze both into a pint glass. Add: ½ oz. Rum 1 oz. Vodka 1 oz. Whiskey ½ oz. Gin ½ oz. Tequila ½ oz. Maple Syrup Mix thoroughly, then layer in 5 oz. of Soda Water and/or Cola, top off with cubed ice. Robert Butt's version below... 2 cups ice cubes into a highball glass 1 part Vodka 1 part Gin 1 part White Rum (clear, not Dark) 1 part White Tequila 1/2 part Triple Sec 1/2 part Sour Mix 1 splash Coke Lemon wedges for garnish And, if you don't have triple sec (such as Cointreau or Grand Marnier) try it with Drambuie... 13ml Drambuie 13ml Blanco Tequila 30ml Cola 2 scoop Cubed Ice 13ml Gin 30ml Lemon Juice 1 individual Lemon Wedge 15ml Sugar Syrup 13ml Vodka 13ml White Rum

shlomo
Nix the tequila, dark rum (or spiced) not white....and bourbon. Jack or Jim are fine. Southern comfort. Yum.
jackupster
Recipe is good...drink looks right but it needs a lemon garnish. This comes from years as a bartender.

I didn't include the lemon wedge garnish as I had run out of lemons when making the drink on the weekend. I will include the lemon garnish next time. JohnS
I tried the Ransom Bishop recipe today. In comparison to Robert Butt's recipe it definitely has more citrus. The IBA version is sweeter.
ElPuro
These are dangerously good. In the past, I have mixed up a large container of them so that I could just add the cola and be off with additional rounds. Made for some fun nights!
