Popular Post zeedubbya
This is a bit different review but I wanted to put some thoughts down on some areas outside of just flavors. When I watch certain reviews and people talk about maybe 20 flavors I lose interest fast. I am sure there are people with a palate refined enough to detect the transition between white pepper, black pepper and cayenne pepper but I am most assuredly not one of those people. Bolivar Tubos 1 ULA JUN15 Pre light--sweet tobacco and wood (cedary, it would seem) very nice Punch cut--12:02 AM Trying to be cognizant of slowing way way down with Bolivar. To me they swing wildly between rough and harsh and sweet earthy and satisfying if you smoke very very slowly. Partagas factory cigars always seem to have 2 interesting characteristics to me--1.) such a great volume of smoke. Even after sitting for 2-3 solid minutes it will give up a lot with even a slight pull. 2.) The smell of the oils from the cigar on your hands has a distinctly funky smell. I have heard others mention this as well--I wonder why this is? To me these are probably as close as it gets to the Coronas Extra...and so they're discontinued as well. Tragedy. Flavors now are coffee with a touch of cream and sugar. Good fungal earthiness is there too. I wonder if saltiness in a retrohale is sometimes what people refer to twang? Could also be interpreted as citrus maybe as well. Not really a taste particularly but more of a feeling. A full roundness or a fizziness almost. This is present. Ash falls on me at 12:23..figured it would hold on a little longer possibly. On a very long deep draw there's pepper in the nose and it's got some bite. It's interesting to me the longer draw you take the way the flavors can change. Even if it's a long slow draw. The volume of smoke makes a difference. With the saltiness and a pepper burn in the nose it almost reminds me of salt water. Not in a bad way though. Earthy, bit of cream..coffee moving more to the espresso side of things. There's a fleeting flavor there which reminds me of whiskey. I think it has to be an Oaky flavor. Hard to pin it down. Stays there pretty much the entire middle third. Maybe picks up a little more bitterness. Needs more time for sure. Still youthful but very promising. Citrus is there--a kind of bitter citrus. Last third some distinct leather and some mongrel coming on. Still has touch of cream and the oaky quality. Maybe it's cedar. Maybe it's English Black Walnut (saw it in an FOH review by Smitty and Alain I believe..). I don't know I just haven't tasted enough wood to make a fair assessment. It's good though. Medium Full to Full. The first 2/3 of this cigar would suit anyone just fine, the last 3rd is where things become more intense. It's a concentration of flavors already there. Once this final third smooths out just a bit these will be absolute stunners. Going to put it out a little early. The mongrely tannic element is sneaking in just a little too much for me. Want to end on a good note. Will probably try these again in a year and see how they're doing. Excellent cigar though. 90 pointer all day long. Very enjoyable. With some age I could see them improving to very high scores. What a shame they're discontinued. What a crying shame. Put out at 1:18 AM, could've smoked another 20 minutes likely. Smoke Bolivar slow. Smoke all cigars slow. My biggest piece of advice to everyone. Store them dry and smoke them slow. Makes all the difference in the world. topdiesel
Nice review Zane. the 1/2/3 are personal faves. Unlike you, these are Cubans that I enjoy smoking fast and can't help but nub them. It is a shame they were discontinued.
JohnS
I think you captured how multi-flavoured this cigar can truly be quite nicely. Great review, thanks!

NYMets01
Did you store them in the tubos? Wonder if that had any impact on what you’re tasting?
