However, I do think that George Miller's own remake of Mad Max in 2015 was excellent. Incidentally, I just finished watching a terrible remake of 13 on TV tonight. The original in French was much better. And I was wondering today was Point Break needed to be remade a few years ago. Remakes pimped up with technological advances/special effects or big name actors just dont do it for me. I think the film industry is loosing it's imagination. When Hollywood started making film adaptations of TV series (especially anime), that's when they lost their creativity. Yes, the Warren Beatty one was a remake, though a very good one in my opinion. The Chris Rock remake was in 2001 and was called Down To Earth. It was really bad. The Seven Samurai (which was inspired by Westerns) spawned The Magnificent Seven (and its remake), Battle Beyond The Stars (Robert Vaughn played a similar character to the one he played in The Magnificent Seven) and The Seven Magnificent Gladiators (I Sette Magnifici Gladiatori). I had high hopes for the movie, but, as usual, Hollywood completely screwed up the story and made an appalling movie to fit the Hollywood formula for what they consider a "good" movie. I'll add a few book adaptations to this list. Dune, the David Lynch version (amazing book, rather silly movie impossible to understand unless you had already read the book), and The Dark Tower by Stephen King. Haven't seen that one yet, but a fantastic story for which the movie adaptation starring Idris Elba completely flopped at the box office apparently. Haven't seen that one yet, but a fantastic story for which the movie adaptation starring Idris Elba completely flopped at the box office apparently. i'd argue adaptations are a different kettle of fish. but dune was a shocker. what would be interesting would be to know how many of the movies named (and i am not arguing the lack of artistic merit/quality) made money. and hence would not be considered flops by hollywood. the problem is we are looking at this from two perspectives. we want great movies. they want to make money. the two are not mutually exclusive but often don't get near each other. unfortunately, enough films make so much money that it allows them to keep throwing darts at the board hoping to get the next big hit.
