not sure we ever thought we'd see over ten K for a bottle of aussie whiskey but here it is.

Australian whisky sells for highest ever price at auction

Posted by: Alana House June 14, 2018

A bottle of Sullivans Cove whisky has sold for more than $11,000 at auction in London.

Sullivans Cove partnered with Christie’s to offer one of the few remaining bottles of the World’ Best Single Cask Single Malt, with all proceeds going to charity.

The bottle offered for auction was Sullivans Cove American Oak Single Cask #HH0351, winner of “World’s Best Single Cask Single Malt” at the 2018 World Whiskies Awards. It was sold under the hammer for £6,600.

The company noted in a statement following the auction: "This is a significant milestone in the Australian whisky industry, and for Sullivans Cove, as our whiskies begin to reach levels of maturity, quality and price associated with the great whisky producing nations of the world.

The bottle had never left the distillery in Cambridge, Tasmania, and had been carefully cellared there since bottling.

Presented in a hand-made Tasmanian Blackwood display box, bottle number 88 came with a framed official certificate from the World Whiskies Awards.

It is one of the rarest single malt whiskies in the world, and a true piece of global whisky history.

Cask #HH0351 was distilled in June 2000 and decanted in January 2017, making it 16 years and five months old. It was matured in a 200L American Oak ex-bourbon barrel and produced only 136 bottles, most of which were sold long before the award was announced.

As a single cask whisky, the exact flavour profile of this bottling is impossible to repeat, as each cask has its own unique character.

All proceeds from the auction will go to the Australian charity The Alannah & Madeline Foundation, whose mission is to keep children safe from all forms of violence.

“We have had significant demand from collectors around the world looking to acquire the award-winning bottle and are really excited to partner with Christie’s to support a Foundation doing great work for our community” said Adam Sable, Managing Director, prior to the auction.
