Classic Movies/Quotes...

Recommended Posts

What are your favourite classic movies or quotes?

Here's why I ask:

I get rather letdown by the usual fare at cinemas, these days, and I find myself regularly delving back in to some old school stuff--even if I've seen it before. But there are so many great old flicks out there that I haven't seen; it's thoroughly worth the investment to track them down and take on a viewing.

My daughter is currently studying film noir movies at school, and just the other day she was telling me about how she had to compare Double Indemnity (1944) and Blade Runner as examples of the genre. She was raving about Double Indemnity and fully sinking the boot into Blade Runner. Well, I always liked Blade Runner, but, curiously enough, I hadn't considered it film noir nor had I seen Double Indemnity. I managed to get a copy of the latter and thoroughly enjoyed it. Just superb film-making.

I've now suggested she watch The Third Man. One of my all-time favourites. As it is for many a film buff.

Anyhow, it got me pondering what else is out there that I might come by via recommendation. I usually just start with an actor and delve in to their career titles. Michael Caine is a good go-to (I'm a big fan of Steve Coogan's & Rob Brydon's The Trip movies, so you can start with a classic quote and go from there!). Get Carter (1971) is my latest revisit... "You're a big man, but you're in bad shape." Ha ha... Rather relevant after my trip to the States and coming back looking like a horse that had been in a good paddock for way too long...

Classic flick this one. He was killer back in the day, ol' Michael Caine.

My favourite quotable movies are The Big Lebowski and Nacho Libre.  Amongst my friends; if any of us start a quote from either of those movies, the entire script will be quoted nonstop.

This is not 'Nam, Smoky, this is bowling, there are rules.

We do this with Monty Python .... a quote for every occasion!

And as a proud (Catholic) uncle, I made damn sure my nephews could sing "Every sperm is sacred" by the time they had their First Communion....

Get Carter is one of my favorites.

The Third Man is excellent - the cuckoo clock scene is fabulous, and when we first see Harry Lime, just wonderful.

Zulu of course. Fasans of em

Goodfellas - as far back as I can remember

Have never watched Napoleon Dynamite. Love The Breakfast Club though... "Forgot my pencil." Classic Judd Nelson.
Screws fall out all the time, the world is an imperfect place.

Big trouble in little china is another classic full of one liners

Yep, the reveal of Harry Lime is one of the best moments in cinema. Brilliantly done.

Ha ha...

Big Trouble In Little China... classic stuff... you can off and rule the universe from beyond the grave... or check into a psycho ward, whichever comes first.

DEAD PERSON: I'm not dead!

CART MASTER: What?

CUSTOMER: Nothing. Here's your nine pence.

DEAD PERSON: I'm not dead!

CART MASTER: 'Ere. He says he's not dead!

CUSTOMER: Yes, he is.

DEAD PERSON: I'm not!

CART MASTER: He isn't?

CUSTOMER: Well, he will be soon. He's very ill.

DEAD PERSON: I'm getting better!

CUSTOMER: No, you're not. You'll be stone dead in a moment.

Full Metal Jacket - reporter on board asking helicopter machine gunner how can he shoot women and children;

"easy don't lead them as much"  not sure if it is the exact quote, but close.

God Father - "leave the gun take the canollies"

"here's looking at you kid"

DeNiro - "you talkin to me?"

"Houston, we have a problem" Tom Hanks

"You can't handle the truth" Jack Nicholson

"go ahead, make my day" Clint E.

"say hello to my little friend" Al P.

"Hasta la vista, baby" Arnold

"A martini. Shaken, not stirred" James B.

Sticking with Coen Brothers, O’ Brother Where Art Though has some great lines.

“Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?”

“Well ain’t this place a geographical oddity, two weeks from everywhere.”

”No thank you Delmar, a third of a gopher would only arouse my appetite without beddin’ her back down.”

”Damn, we’re in a tight spot!”

Im a child of the 80s so my brother and I will relentlessly quote national lampoons vacation, easy money, coming to america, predator, commando, fletch, etc...but a very underrated quoteable film is Bloodsport...mostly for the accent that JCVD gloriously displays...
