Terrible burn in a PSP PSD4

Recommended Posts

I was in a casino last night and really only looking forward to the stick I brought with me, a 2016 PSP PSD4. This thing would not burn at all  and it was dry boxed for 2 days (by accident, but still). This was the worst burning cigar I've ever seen. Huge canoes, wouldnt stay lit etc etc. I left it in the ashtray and walked out pissed off. And I was up.

Does anyone think it could be the casino that caused this cigar to behave so poorly? Air quality, fans etc. . .  I've had one or two out of this box and they've been ok. Probably just a bad stick but it was that bad.

I had a box of Monte 4s all stored the same as I am blasting through them.  About 10 in, one of them burned so wonky I didnt even enjoy the cigar as I was trying to figure out WTF was going on.  The wrapper and only the wrapper seemed to be burning, within 5 minutes the wrapper was burned over a solid inch and a half and the cherry was now equal in size.  The cigar was producing very little smoke, this continued through the entire first 1/3 until the 2.5 inch cherry fell off still glowing red. The rest smoked fine, still not sure what caused this, but sounds similar in a different way to your story.

edit; please ignore the horrid grammar and punctuation. I just woke up....that's the excuse Im going with.

I broke even twice in 2 separate casinos (Caesar's Palace and Luxor) on my last trip to LV. I consider walking out with the same amount of money you walked in with is a good thing. :D

Made a few grand in a casino today but ... I was photographing it for the architect.

For the life of me I can’t understand why people even spend their money at these places.

I consider the FOH quality ratings to be a strong quality indicator, but not a firm guarantee for each stick.  Hand-made products from Cuba, after-all.

In my experience, the probability of a good burn is much better with 1) even PE sticks, and 2) sticks with a 3+ years of age, and 3) those kept in reasonable and consistent humidor conditions (in my case, that's 62-68% RH while around 65-70 deg F).  But even then, you're just playing the probabilities game. Doing the right thing with all of the above will only increase your chances of a nice burn -- not guarantee it.

This doesn't include smoker's skill, which is often overlooked and sometimes impolite to bring up in conversation without being a bit delicate.  For example, I just wrapped up a 10-pack of April 2015 PSP Lusis, and half the sticks didn't burn great, despite great nailing all of the above criteria.  Would more age help?  Perhaps.  But I know that in at least one case, I was in too great a rush and my poor burn was likely self-inflicted.

Fun and addiction. Usually the latter. Or the former. Both.

Grading is a visual indication of wrapper quality. Doesn't and can't account for the quality of the combustion, filler quality or environmental factors which can equally effect burn.

I've smoked a few PSP sticks with those flame retardant wrappers - it happens! Always carry a back up!

As @El Presidente says nothing good happens in a casino :D

I've found that sometimes oily wrappers need extra acclimatization and dry box times. And of course,  sometimes you get a stick that just doesn't burn well.

Having smoked in my share of casinos, there's nothing special about them in terms of cigars, in my experience. That said, it seems like burn issues always crop up when you're the least prepared to fudge around with a lighter.

People love super dark and oily wrappers.. which generally tend to be on the thicker side . I prefer not to have to deal with constant touch ups. Throw in the under filling issues , and you have yourself an acrid cigar that won’t stay lit.

Going to the casino = buying/smoking Cuban cigars.  Some look great on their face but you crap out anyway....

I used to get pissed off over a bad stick, but life’s too short.  Now when I go anywhere I always have more than what I think I’ll want.  If i drop it, if it sucks, if someone (nice) asks for one then i’m prepared.

Did you try Pigfish’s crush technique by any chance...?
