Popular Post 99call
Cohiba Maduro 5 2018 Aroma at cold: Nutty, sweet with a slight dirty 'drum' rolling tobacco note Cold Draw: Rich moreinsh, toasted tobacco, slightly vegetal galangal note 1st 3rd Really unimpressive start, a bit like a poor PLMC. It’s in the guise of that sticky BBQ sauce note that you can get with Juan Lopez and PL. Starting to get quite tasty, where as it was either a bad PL/JL, it’s starting to become quite a nice unctuous mix of the two. A sort of burnt Marmelade note, which as a Brit, I’m definitely a fan of. Still with that said, at this point I’d 100% rather be smoking a JL2, or even better a JL1! 2nd 3rd The combustion is quite impressive, toasted tobacco, and ERDM galangal flavour, melded with the PL JL mix. Slow burning and really well rolled, but it contains about 45% of the flavour you’d get out of any JL2. It’s harsh to judge things by comparison, but so far this is adding weight to my confusion as to why people respect Cohiba so much. 3rd 3rd I speak to soon, as to the great construction, the LE style thick wrapper has led to this starting to tunnel. Not too bad, easily salvaged. Thick billowing viscous smoke, but oddly tasteless. There is a tiny bit of Cohiba DNA in this, A lighter register of citrus, almost like Yuzu, and dark manuka honey. I will add that if that flavour combo was amped up to 85% from the whisps its currently giving, it would be a blockbuster blend. Sadly it’s fleeting. WOW, big U-turn, big lovely blasts of ovaltine richness, lovely……This is going out with a bang. very interesting, but much too little, much too late Conclusion Contains bursts that if consistent would lead to a 100pt cigar, but just fleeting crackles of magic. With such a big cigar, it feels like your frustratingly waiting for them, in the mass of tobacco that puts out poor quality JL PL dank flavours. This only goes to convince me further, that by putting a few excellent leaves in a pound of filler, you effectively loose twice over. It was an interesting cigar, with some extremely pleasurable moments. I will continue my efforts with Cohiba, I will always continue to try and understand them, but this didn’t go anyway to change my mind Score 88, Frustrating
Bri Fi
Sorry to hear about this experience. Sometimes with paying the extra for a Cohiba or Davidoff, you’d at least expect good construction even if the flavor is off. Also, I’m happy to say I have a box of JL2 that shipped today so I’m glad you held it at such a high regard.
bigguccisosa
This is a very informative and honest review. Pretty similar to my only Cohiba Maduro experience as well. Thanks for sharing.

havanaclub
I find the maduro line requires some age. 4-5 plus years and they can be magical. I have smoked an OR magicos and had a box of magicos from the second or third year of release 08-09 if memory serves and they were excellent with age. I have a PSP box of the genios that I am gonna sir on. I have smoked a few and they need some downtime for sure. CaptainQuintero
Definitely had to go Google galangal! That type of sophistication doesn't reach up into Yorkshire I'm in a similar boat to you, I struggle to find the worth in the maduro lines it's either bad luck or they're just not for me. I just don't think it's Cuba playing to it's strengths. I seem to be able to get a lot better 'maduro experience' from a NC if I fancy it. I can see why Cuba had expanded into the idea, but NC companies seem to have started to move away from the maduro craze. So give it 7/8 years for Cuba to catch up... The only exception for me is the secretos; I'd have them regularly if the price was more friendly. Really special little sticks.

Ginger mixed with cut flowers/grass is how I'd describe galangal. Aged ERDM GDE have it in spades........ehem.....in my opinion.......i realise many may think i'm on mind altering drugs

Grab your codpiece, poleaxe and meet me on Bosworth at noon! Honour aside, I'm going to have to look into galangal, it sounds like it could be great for giving gingerbread a bit of a change up. These new foodie things coming in are brill. First pasteurisation now fancy ginger!

It's like breaking into a botanical gardens and munching on some sort of green toxic amazonian bulb. Beer Belly
If you can age them, do it, because with some years on them they're absolute stunners! Not sure if they're worth the price though....
