Summer Time Cocktails

With summer around the corner and those 90-100F+ days rearing their ugly heads, cocktails are a nice to have handy for refreshing drinks and a smoke. Anyone here have a recipe of a favorite?

Let me just stymie this joke now:

"2oz. bourbon in a glass, The End."

Yes, I'm sure we all love our neat mid-top shelf drinks, but I'm more looking for cocktails ideas, unique or just plain good. Here's mine:

Dan's Rye Fashioned

- 2oz. Rye (Redemption Rye, I like spice bombs)

- tsp  Agave (This stuff is basically pre-made and all natural simple syrup, super handy for impatient mixologists)

- .5oz fresh squeezed mandarin orange juice

- Bitters, dash to taste (2 dashes for me ?)

Transfusion

1/3 vodka
1/3 Welch’s grape juice
1/3 ginger ale

I am not responsible for what happens next ! Goes down like water best to or mix a few bottles b/c they vanish quick.

Year round go-to for me, don’t like sweet drinks for the most part, so I believe it’s called a Gin Rickey - fancy name for a simple drink: club soda, gin, the juice of one lime.  The lime and club soda make it a health drink...the gin makes it fun.

Pimm’s Cup:

1 slice cucumber

1 slice orange

fill highball glass halfway with ice

add 2 ounces pimms no. 1

fill to top with limonada soda

add mint sprig

This sounds enticing. Had to google Pimms. Now I need to keep an eye out for it.

This is a good one. I used to squeeze fresh limes for my coin style margs. When serving a bunch of people, I'd squeeze damn near 20 limes... I found the world of Limeade it made life a whole lot easier and still miles above the crappy marg mix.

I've been using Newman's Own for some time - not too sweet and no corn syrup. The Pomegranate Lemonade works well also.

Living in a somewhat warm, subtropical climate, I've got a few.

Mint julep

Same as a regular mint julep, but mixed with Pierre Ferrand 1840 cognac instead of whiskey.  I got the idea after having an "1840 Sazerac" at the Roosevelt hotel in New Orleans that did the same substitution.  Magnificent and worlds better than the classic julep.

Mojito

Mixed with a dry Haitian rhum I adore (Barbancourt 8 year) with a substitution of Peychaud's bitters in place of the simple syrup.

Finally, the Death in the Afternoon.  In Hemingway's own words:

"Pour one jigger absinthe into a Champagne glass. Add iced Champagne until it attains the proper opalescent milkiness. Drink three to five of these slowly"

Gin Sour

  • 2 oz gin
  • .75 oz simple syrup
  • .75 oz fresh lemon juice

Combine all ingredients and ice in a shaker; shake and strain into a glass; garnish with lemon slice or peel.

***Substituting fresh lime juice for the lemon juice is a Gimlet, and is also very good!

Caipirinha

half Lime, cut into 4 wedges

2 tsp raw sugar

2 oz Cachaça

Use a cocktail Mudler to crush limes and sugar. Add crushed ice.

My top three (in no particular order):

Hendricks Gin & Tonic (slice of cucumber, not lemon)

Four Pillars Bloody Shiraz Gin with ice (no need for tonic)

Mojito (preferably made by Carlos, whilst overlooking the Malecon)
