Popular Post CaptainQuintero
The sun is out and after a week solid of rain I'm going to break out one of my all time favourite cigars, I'm dedicating this Summer to relaxation after a lot of wedding planning and work. Everything went great on the day but glad all that planning is behind me now! This is one of the many Lonsdales that Upmann used to produce and they all varied in strength, body and flavours; you could pick a particular Lonsdale based on how you were feeling. The No.1, The Lonsdale, The Amatistas, Gran Corona, Super Corona..all part of the Upmann stable. Anyway, I'm just glad that I've these! Slightly tight draw but feels fine in the hand, I'm guessing it will open up as we go on. Straight off it's just pure peaches and cream. No leather, no toast just buckets of rich peaches and cream. Wow, but true to form just as all the previous have been. Carrying on and a citrus tang just on the tip of the tongue creeps in, this slowly begins to morph into a rich vibrant leather. It's worth noting that the cigar is burning away at a phenomenal rate, big clouds of thick velvety smoke everywhere! The draw has opened up now it's reaching the end of the first third. There's still that peach and cream core but a shortbread/sponge cake character has started to develop. Second third and almost right away that intense peach and cream fades away and the sponge cake takes to the forefront, a vanilla element working its way in. It's worth noting the razor sharp burn, not a wonk in sight. Carrying on at a steady rate now and a latte/milk chocolate character starts to come into the mix, with that sponge cake it's like you're dipping the vanilla laden cake right into a cup of sweet creamy coffee with a healthy dusting of chocolate. Talk about a dessert cigar... Why does nothing seem to get this character/flavour nowadays? Age has really brought the flavours out but still, it's like the blending style has just moved away from this. The Sir Winston is very, very close but apart from that, you're grasping somewhere between old Cohiba Corona Especial, a well aged QdO Corona and the LGC #4. Maybe fashions are just trending towards darker styles? Into the final third now and I've poured a glass of Glenmorangie 10 to try and match up that sponge cake note; I usually get that in buckets from the 10. The cigars is darker now, it's moved more towards shortbread, that biscuit core taking over from the sponge. Still even this grows darker, like the shortbread has caught on the edges in the oven. The coffee has followed suit in taking a more intense and roasted turn, a burnt sugar/caramel just rounding everything off. 96/100, would have hit triple digit if the second third had continued to the end. It never grew hot or grubby but I love chasing those rich flavours just before things start to turn darker If you ever see a box just throw your card at the sales clerk and run out the store with the box shoved under your shirt! 8
