And just like that, we're at #10, Moneypenny! It's time for the classic Bond debate to go up the Flag Poll! A slight wrinkle here, though. In this instance, if you choose option 2 in particular, then elaborating in the thread below will likely be something you wish to avail yourself of.

You know the drill: read the question, vote on the poll, elaborate in the thread if you so desire. Voting participants go into the draw for an El Pres sampler! - Drawn next Wednesday (Aus local time).

All about 50/50...

50/50 is a weekly poll where we find out whether or not some serious bones of contention questions can be finally be buried or will instead remain above ground as a fleshy 50/50 debate... you know, such weighty issues as these...

If given no other option:

are you a Cohiba or Monte person?

do you prefer Hunnicutt or Trapper in M*A*S*H?

Connery or Moore as Bond?

Apple or PC?

Smooth or Crunchy peanut butter?

do you prefer wearing men's or women's underwear?

Sacrificing chickens or virgins?

...that sort of standard fare.

Vote in the poll and further bolster your standpoint in the thread below if you wish. Poll Votes are public and there's a couple of sticks up for grabs for participants.

Also, PM me Polls that you'd like me to conduct on 50/50 and there'll be a prize for those we decide to use.

I chose Sean Connery. Still I don't understand how much disdain there is for Roger Moore. It's not his fault they tried a bunch of special effects that were done way before the tech was there to do it properly. Solid Bond IMO.

A little biased, Steve?

Absolutely!

It used to be a Connery/Moore thing, but times have changed. Now it's a Connery/everyone else thing.

See I'm biased toward impartiality. ;)

I know I may catch some crap for this, but i gotta go with Daniel Craig.  Just think that dude has the true character of Bond. Just seems to have a much quieter understated confidence. I guess Connery was just way too before my time. The MI6 supporting cast for Connery's bond is way better though.  Desmond Llewelyn as Q was the best.

No-brainer for me. I like some of the others (Brosnan is underrated) but it’s Connery, period. It’s  like asking who was the best Doctor Who - only Tom Baker need apply.

Of the actors who have played Bond; Connery, Lazenby, Moore, Dalton and Brosnan (we won't talk about Niven, Sellers et al in the 1976 "Casino Royale" farce), Connery is the best, with Moore, Brosnan, Dalton and Lazenby folowing in that order. Though, you have to give props to Lazenby for outright lying to get the job!

Yeah, the Lazenby story s pretty amazing,  A total non-actor conning his way into that role.

Don't sell Casino Royale short, though - at '67 it's on of Woody Allen's first real screen breakthroughs and I think it's frequently brilliant.  Certainly can't be judged in the traditional 007 canon though, I agree,

tough, with connery going first - he set the standards. it is a bit of a no-brainer. HE IS 007 and so everyone else competes for next best. which is undoubtedly craig. and he is very close to connery. in fact, i'd say that casino royale is the best of all the bond flicks.

people defend moore, and i would really like him to have done better. but his are by far the most "dated". he treated the role like a cartoon. the humour from connery was a highlight but moore tries too hard, pushes it at every chance, pulls silly faces. but most of all, bond in a gorilla suit. bond in a clown's getup. spare me. it is truly a wonder that the bond films survived moore. he took them to previously unimaginable lows and shredded 007's dignity. can anyone really imagine connery in a gorilla suit or craig in a clown's getup?

lazenby - really tough to squeeze in one. i always thought he was far better than people give him credit for. but up against connery, a hiding to nothing. always found it interesting that the producers offered him a huge 7 film deal. and he knocked it back!! so presumably they were happy with him.

brosnan. as james bond, i thought he made a cracking remington steele. hard to take him seriously. he was forced and wooden for most films but i actually thought he was getting better at the end and then they decided to dump him. i'd have been happy to see him do another or two. thought he started poorly but grew into the role.

dalton - the most like the books for me, at least outside craig. but inflated sharks and silly religious cults made it all seem like they were not sure if he should be bond or roger moore. liked him.

craig. excellent. let down by the director of quantum and some of the script of spectre. if you watch quantum without the fights etc, it is not that bad. but the director made a cesspool of those scenes. impossible to tell who is who, who is winning, what is happening and in a bond film, that is the kiss of death. i would not let him direct a cat food commercial. in spectre, to try and have us believe that bond falls for the french girl who supposedly also hates him, and all within 48 hours, stuffed that film for me. she has the charisma of traffic lights without the colour. it was absurd. i know she is back in the next one. hopefully to be shot by bond for the crime of intense boredom and poor acting and very early in the film. also, the big thug. he supposedly walks into a meeting of the super crims and gets a top spot in the organisation by killing someone without saying a word. yeah, that rang true. the man who is supposedly the most brilliant criminal picks his team by which thug can kill someone. not by their intelligence or contacts or anything else that might be useful aside from a bicep. made no sense.

Indeed, David T. emerged as my favorite of the "new" Doctors (he's fantastic in Good Omens, too) and would probably fight it out with Patrick Troughton for my 2nd-favorite overall.  Tom Baker was my introduction to the series, though, and it's hard for anyone to truly rival him in my book.

No contest. Connery ticked all the boxes as Bond. He WAS 007, everyone else was second! Daniel Craig would be my second choice, followed by Moore. The big problem with Moore is that his Bond films have aged the worst, and many of them come across as being incredibly cheesy now, especially as he aged.

Off topic, but I totally agree with Ken here. Tom Baker was probably the best Doctor who, but I would say David Tennant is my favourite. His manic performance and enthusiasm for the role was infectious. Definitely a 50/50 poll to be had in that.

Yeah, but the way Tennant ended made him sound really whiny.
