Where can you still smoke in peace?

Recommended Posts

El Prez mentioned Belgrade as a smoking friendly place, just wondering what other places are left in the world like that following the smoking bans.  This thread may help to plan my future vacations.

I went to the south of France this year and also Berlin, and was pleasantly surprised to find that you could still smoke outside at your table in cafes or restaurants in both without causing trouble. Budapest however is a no no.

What bars, restaurants or cafes have FOHers visited globally and been able to enjoy a cigar recently, either indoors or outside?

Indoors... none!

Outdoors, I was able to smoke at several bars/restaurants in Thailand, Beijing, Sicily, Italy, Germany and Malta. There are also bars here in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale where I can smoke indoors and outdoors. Indoor smoking in south Florida is only at establishments that do not serve food, they must get 80% or 90% of their receipts from non-food orders.

In Toronto.

  • My backyard.  :)
  • Parks are technically "illegal" to smoke in, especially near playgrounds and sports fields. But there are many where no one will bat an eye.
  • On the sidewalk in front of the LCDH and nearby benches and parks in the Yorkville area (which is akin to Rodeo drive in Beverly Hills. Lots of fancy shops and well to do people. Cigars are not uncommon here).  In general, the sidewalk is fair game as it is public space. There is rule that you cannot smoke within 9 metres of any shops' door, but the sidewalk breaks up that boundary.
  • Ive seen people smoking cigars at the yearly Indy Car event. That's the only sporting event it can be done at it seems.
  • Most open air street festivals.  Though you should pick your spots as there are stretches with kids' stuff (games, rides, etc)
  • There are some "smoke easies" but I won't get into that.

I frequently sit outside coffee shops and cafes in the UK smoking a cigar and have never yet had any issues. Also Geneva come to think of it. I haven't been to the European mainland for a while but I don't think it's generally a problem at outside tables anywhere.

Germany has state smoking laws - not federal ones.

So my state, Rheinland Pfalz near Frankfurt ( which is state of Hessen and totally different ) has no problem with you smoking inside a non-food serving Bar ( or just Snacks ).

Smoking outside no problem anywhere in Germany.

Vegas immediately comes to mind. Also, Taiwan was relatively smoke friendly, compared to China. Germany, if you're in the right state (as Nino stated above) - don't go to Bavaria, for example.

*My sister just returned from a trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She spoke of several Cigar Bars down there.

For the United States Vegas seems the most friendly in recent years. Not in restaurants, but I believe all the casinos allow smoking on their gaming floors (though not necessarily in the hotel areas), and most have bars on the floors. That seems like a more permissive attitude that most U.S. cities these days. Even those in the South which used to tolerate it seem to be cracking down, closing airport lounges, etc. Vegas still even allows you to smoke in several of the slots areas in the airport, which was a blessing in a recent layover. On another subject, I tend to forget how terrible American Airlines is since I don’t fly with them often, but seriously, they are the worst. More expensive than budget airlines with worse service and reliability.

I am building in Reno. I can get a smoking room, smoke in the loser's lounge, and at a lot of tables. Not everywhere mind you, restaurants are a no go...
Piggy's site is a go!

Japan. Indoors, outdoors, anywhere really. Except for a few public touristy streets.

In many third world countries (China, Vietnam) it's also technically outlawed, but $ talks and eyes can be closed..

My most recent trip to Geneva where I smoked in various outdoor cafes didn't attract a second glance.

I was at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs a few months back for a gig and they allowed smoking outside and on their patio. They also sold overpriced Macanudo and Rocky Patel’s at the bar.

I haven’t been there in quite a few years (10+) but what a beautiful hotel! I did not recall that they were as permissive of smoking. I suppose back then a great deal of the states were much more lax in terms of restrictions so perhaps it just seemed the norm then.

1. My patio

2. Cigar lounges.  When Nebraska crafted their smoking ban they carved out a spot for Cigar lounges.  The way it was crafted had some issues relating to our State Constitution.  The whole thing was because of one Bar owner that had bars in the two largest cities of Nebraska.   He blamed the closing of one because of the smoking ban.   The problem is it was a huge pool hall and people don't play as much pool as they used to.   I think he really should have changed it up to a pool/ sports bar and it might have survived.  In the end they fixed the law and the cigar bars were able to stay cigar bars.   It is interesting you can't smoke cigarettes inside so you will be there enjoying a bourbon and cigar and there will be several cigarette smokers outside.   There are at least 3 downtown cigar lounges in my city.

Oh...I remember smoking with you in London and I recall how great it was being able to smoke in so many places across London!

Not many places to smoke in Sydney. Bars and pubs have smoking areas. In public...it is almost illegal anywhere and even cafes are hard to smoke at.

Edit - P.S: my favourite Cafe with a great smoking area closed last month :( Not happy

I wear many hats... including hard ones! I am supposed to have a 'desk job' but supporting my projects where needed is a big part of my job.

Yep, this was pour night.

... why I have to fly in to find the footings that they did not place is still baffling to me! But you gotta' do what you gotta' do!!!

The smoking lamp is always on at my projects. A great place for Partagas Chicos. -the Pig
