Popular Post 99call
Bolivar Churchill : (tubo) Mid 1980s Aroma at cold : Oozing with heavy leather tannins. antique furniture, beef jerky, butchers smell. Cold Draw: Meat, leather liver, lots of dry tannin, i think this could be brutal!! 1st 3rd: The perfect cuban draw, immediate presence of a huge complexity, dry oak twang, heavy heavy meatiness, pumpernickel bread, sour dark rye. my granddads old dunhill pipe tobacco. This is luxurious, voluptuous, but if this is to be the ‘soft start’ then Jesus, it’s full, and savoury. Burnt oily sunflower seeds. Good god! 1980’s bolivars are the king of full cigars. This single cigar has got more rambunctious grit in it than a whole box of current Praty 898’s It’s like drinking a bottle of Tom Fords ‘Tuscan Leather’ blended with the contents of an antique furniture shop. so, so good, and sad that these are relics. BCG’s are powder puffs compared to this. 2d 3rd: A rye bready sweetness, rolls out of the freshly ashed cigar, and acts as a lovely treat for what has been a heavy start. Toasted caraway seed enters the fray, and the whole experience is reminding me of the old polish bakery near where I grew up, the dark rye and smoked meats, this i simply excellent, the cigar is heavily packed, and burning on autopilot, This cigars is yet again proof that tubos age wonderfully well. 3rd 3rd: Sweetness is tamping up, and it’s in a bit of a Punch RS11 ‘Roasty Toasty’ phase as Ken would put it. Still quite a heady retro, not quite a ‘pinch’ but pretty overwhelming. Sort of a fudgey sweet cream developing, but its still laid over dominating aspects of old leather, burnt rye bread, roasted beef, toasted caraway. Just gets better and better, blown away. This is what we’ve lost ladies and gents!! The age of attention deficit disorder, and a populist palate that wants everything to taste like salted caramel. Yes salted caramel is pretty bloody good, but this cigar was serious, seriously challenging/eclectic and seriously savoury........ and seriously good. This cigar dies in a sticky fugg of treacle, and liquorice, you bloody beauty! Conclusion: Just epic, 1980’s Boli tubo’s are for me the pinnacle of a full bodied cigar, I don’t think they can be surpassed. Nico
I’m a huge Boli fan so maybe I’m partial but damn, your review made this cigar sound like heaven . The jealousy I’m feeling right now is overpowering me!

Bri Fi
I wonder what this cigar would retail at vs a Behike or GR. This sounds like you found the holy grail. I look at what some people pay per stick ($120+) on aged stock and this seems like it was worth it. Great review brother

Great review brother I think they are currently selling in the auctions around £60 to 70 when they come up. I sold on a box and some Especial tubos from the same date recently, (not being able to justify keeping smoking them versus value), but on the basis of this cigar......I made a big mistake....one of my very few sale regrets

Ha they say..."you don't, ask you don't get".....but sadly in this case the reverse is also true. I did until recently, but stupidly moved them on. now we are both without ? Derboesekoenig
Yeah the better question is, where do you get these? Seems like the auctions I've seen don't ship to the states.

cfc1016
Thanks for that trip down memory lane. The pre-strain-change bolis were absolutely superb. I think you've perfectly echoed why I find modern bbfs to be such an utter disappointment.

I'm sure they will have many fans these days, but even as early as 2008 you can see a big power shift, and the boli line getting more and more soft, easy and chocolately. A real shame. Partagas Maduro no 1 is doing this job, it doesen't have to be replicated numerous times across the catalogue, and especially not by their flagship vitola.
