Dress Shoes and Boots ?

Recommended Posts

I haven't purchased a set of black dress shoes or boots in over 15 years but find myself needing to.

Generally I wear boots (snake/ostrich/alligator) but I suspect I will need to go down the more traditional shoe route this time around.

I have little idea what brands are good these days. Looking for quality. I use to buy Church when in banking but that looks to be overkill these days for something that I will wear a dozen times a year. I am not even sure they are still at that level of quality. What do you look for in the build?

In mens dress shoes .....and boots (I could always use another pair) :ok:...........the high quality brands/makes that deliver a little bang for buck?

Gracias :spotlight:

High quality with tons of color and size options. They can also be resoled for longevity. I have several pairs and love them.      https://www.allenedmonds.com/

When’s the court date and what are the allegations against you? I don’t have to put on a monkey suit for once every couple years. I’m good with a pair of Clark’s as well.

Wear the pirate costume and the ostrich boots! In the USA right now you'd be vindicated and promoted.

I thought you weren't allowed to wear full quill ostrich?!

I bought two pair of Bally a lonnng time ago - stitched leather soles -  that are still in excellent condition. Granted I don't wear them all that often, but they are extremely well made nonetheless. If I had Ayala money, I'd have some shoes bespoke made the next time I went over to England. You're welcome  :wink2:

P.S. You getting married?

No idea what is available in Aus, but here in the UK I am very happy with Barker. Trad manufacture, good materials, wide range of styles. Broadly conservative designs but that’s a good thing for dress shoes. Very like Church but a little less old-fashioned and a bit less spendy. I’ve trekked mine all over the world. They do Dainite rubber soles which is bloody useful...

Let us know what you are thinking!

I strongly second Allen Edmonds. Love the fit, styles, longevity and comfort.  A little more cost than average but well worth it in my opinion.

RM Williams comfort craftsman black boots I wear near on every work day. Tough enough to wear on the property and smart enough to wear into town.

The funny thing is in that video the guy posted above. They make it out like they are Stacey Adams quality or something and they are the "low level" quality shoe. A. Edmonds shoes are high quality and I have been through quite a few pairs. Very confortable (I wear wides E-EEE) and stylish.

I'm way more interested in what prompted the change of direction? I thought ostrich boots were acceptable  everywhere?

I have been wearing ECCO dress shoes for work for many years. They have many varieties and are very well made and comfortable along with lasting a good amount of time. Usually range from 100-250 USD depending on style and how dressy you get.  I won’t ever buy another type for work.

For every day dress I love Ecco for the comfort but for more occasional formal occasions I go with Allen Edmonds.

Being a brit I have to back the british leather shoe industry and I've picked up a few Barkers and recently found an awesome pair of Joseph Cheaney, great shoes & boots for the price and will last me a lifetime with resoling.

Regarding Allen Edmonds I read that they have started to outsource their supply from China and so the quality has started to decline from their previous high standards but I've not personally had a pair myself to testify.

Some shoemakers I’ve had experience with are linked below. Styles vary between them to a degree, but they are all extremely well made and comfortable on the foot. Custom lasts are a good way to go if you have the access and the time - especially if you have oddly shaped feet or have differences in length.

A couple others I don’t have experience with but are known to make great shoes:
