Popular Post Wailbait
THIS is my review weekend. I know that it is common wisdom to “buy the cigar, not the code.” But I just can’t divorce it. Perhaps it’s the desire for pattern recognition or the need to make sense of ostensible senselessness. But I’m a code tracker. It’s not to say that I’m not able to enjoy a PTR 15 knowing there is a MEG next to it, but I like systems. (Maybe I should get out of this hobby?) I started to reflect on the code that has really clicked for me. It’s easy to say, “Laguito makes the best cigars.” Maybe they do. I don’t smoke many Cohibas so it’s limited to D4s, E2’s and a few oddball Edmundos. La Corona is my go-to factory and I was thinking that might be my play. I love EML and TOS stuff from 13-15. Plus I love diplomaticos and SCDLH. It’s so tempting. Here’s the thing. The ULA (Partagas) stuff from 2013-15 was just so darned good. Allones, Partagas, Quai and LGC stuff is wonderful. The MDO4 is my favorite. Its a lovely evening in Los Angeles. From a weather perspective that is. Riots and looting and other things have definitely affected my overall happiness, but at least it’s nice out. The cigar looks good. These sticks never “look” like much so prelight there isn’t much to see. First half. It’s so darn perfumey. Light, aromatic and easy. Pairs well with a martini. I appreciate the green apple notes. It’s a clean cigar, both mature and refined. I think the MDO4 is one of my favorites because it’s smokeable after a year but can age for awhile. I enjoy its arc. Second half Graceful. Some of the caramel qualities come through. Small cigar but tells a wonderful story. New flavors emerge and actually becomes medium-minus in body. It’s not a powerhouse but it’s a memorable smoke. I can go on and on about codes that have been successful (or unsuccessful) for me but ULA 13-15 stuff is good, smokes well now and seems to have legs.
