Travelling with cuban cigars

Recommended Posts

Problem as in having someone confiscate them from you? No. Never heard of that or had it happen to me. My experience is they don't care if you have cigars, they are more interested in lighters and cutters on carry-ons. I've never had any comments made by security on the number of cigars in my carry-on. If you can squeeze 50 into your carry-on that is the route I would go. You know they are being handled a little more gently and not being exposed to the cold of the luggage hold. Plus they can't get lost.

I travel every week (or at least I did until March) with a 15 count travel humidor and have never had an issue with TSA. The only thing they have ever questioned me on in 100's of flights is my lighters. Cutters or cigars have never been an issue. Torch lighters are strictly prohibited though so bring a soft flame or Bic which are allowed in your carry on. You can always buy a cheap torch lighter when you get there too. Walgreens has Ronson Jet-lites for around $5 and there is one right on the strip.

As @Bram Smoker said, carry-on is your best option. That way you know your cigars are being handled correctly and temperatures are much more controlled on the interior of the plane,

Never had an issue. Torch lighters are the issue. Either buy a bundle of disposable and ship to your hotel to hold for you if it’s a bachelor party (w lots of cutters) or go w soft flame. I have read smoking in casinos is more limited now so you may want to see how things are at your hotel. Last time I went we got a large air BnB w a nice Covered patio. Always had a place to chill w a cigar before or after going to the tables. We were there watching basketball so we bet all day via app. Different times now.

i am just always wary of packing anything expensive or important in checked baggage. lots of sticky fingers handling baggage and i've seen a lot of suitcases get thrown on the belts with stuff falling out, never to be seen again.

Yep, no worries about confiscation. Don't believe TSA has the authority anyway.

I always travel with cigars, cutter and X-ray proof torch or Global Traveler.

Agreed carry-on is the way to go if at all possible.

Never had a problem with CCs in either carry on or checked.  TSA doesn't care.

I always have cutters, lighters, and even cans of butane in checked luggage without a problem.  But don't bring any cutters or lighters you can't afford to lose.  I just bring cheapos.

The bigger problem you may run into is the dry air in Las Vegas giving you wrapper splits.  Even when I pack in several Bovedas in my travel boxes, the wrappers get dry very quickly.  I always wet the wrapper leaf with some water before I cut and it helps avoid the splits.

If you're headed to the Strip, make sure to check out the Montecristo Lounge at Caesar's.  And you can light up most anywhere on casino floors without a problem.  (Just not in sportsbooks.)  Vegas is still a relative safe haven for us cigar smokers.

So what is the rule on a soft flame ST Dupont?
I had a cheap torch confiscated out of my golf bag on a flight to Hawaii because it was full of butane.

I rarely touch my Dupont because I’m scared some TSA employee will give me a hard time about it.

Aside from the Montecristo lounge mentioned above I also like Davidoff at the Fashion show and RhumBar in the Mirage, both outside when the weather is conducive.

Casa Fuente in the Forum isn't a bad spot for a Mojito and a smoke either.

Don't forget to bring FOH Lighter for your journey! It can be separeted into 2 pieces and refill cartridge, so it's travel friendly lighter. You can try putting torch lighter in checked luggage too (I tried it and nothing disappeared luckily).

Leave it at home.  Last thing you want is some TSA agent confiscating your Dupont over a lack of understanding about flame types.  ( or simply not caring about the flame type and taking it anyways)

Good advice.

The TSA website says "disposable and Zippo lighters" so technically they could confiscate your Dupont or other refillable lighter because it is neither a Zippo nor disposable. Although I have never had anything confiscated other than a torch lighter or two I have tried to sneak past TSA, I always go by the motto "never bring what you can't afford to lose".

Yea it never flies with me anymore. It was a gift to me by my fiancé and before I knew the rules I flew with it a few times, (once to Cuba) and got pretty lucky it never was confiscated.

I just use matches now or buy a cheap lighter upon arrival.

This. Until 10 March I flew every week. Not once have I had issue with cigars taking a ride with me.

Haven't flown since mid-February so that's 5 months with no risk! :0

Do you want to take the risk on a $1000 lighter? I believe airport authorities are within their rights to take it away on the basis it contains flamable gas. You could always empty it and argue the point. But risky and stressful.
