Best smokes w least age

Recommended Posts

So I think this topic may have been brought up before, but to update, what are the best smokes for sparking up w little age? Let's go w Top 5.

And feel free to include what you think need the MOST rest before sparking!

For least age, mine are (in no particular order):

Trini Reyes

HdM Petit Robusto

JL 1

SLR Regios

Cohiba Medio Siglo

Honorable mention, Siglo II and JL 2.

IMO the smokes that need the most rest are Bolivars and Partagas. Bolis especially seem to take longest for the ammonia to dissipate, mostly the BBF.

JL2 seem to be great when fresh to me. I went through a box before they were a year old.

Diplomaticos seem to be good fresh or after 2 years and not in between.

Trinidad, por laranaga and h upman seem to need the most time for me

I find the Reyes very approachable with minimum age and the upmann half corona also

Recent Reyes and Partagas Shorts have been good here. A couple year-old D4s, RyJ Churchills and Short Churchills, too.

I've had a few D4s that were great and under a year on them. Strong, but not bitter or ammonia tasting.

I've had good experiences recently with young Monte, RyJ and Trinidad, but even so the last third generally gets a bit dirty. For me the brands that most want more time are Cohiba, Por Laranaga and Upmann. All the same I'd say that wrapper makes a much bigger difference than marca: you don't want to smoke any dark oily cigars when they are too young.

ERDM Demi Tasse, HUHC, Punch Punch, Trinidad Coloniales, RASS all treated me well young, though I'm sure there is plenty of room for improvement as they age.

JL2 and RYJ Wide Churchhill were both good up until the last third where they got ammonia tasting.

For me SLR Regios, Connie B and PSD4.

Limited experience here but I think Connie 1, Medio Siglo, JL1, and RyJ WC are good young (even less than a year)

Think Mag 46, Bolivar, RASS, and Coro need 3-5

of course YMMV ;)

One that stands out this summer is the RyJ Wide Churchills.

Big fan of these. Didn't think I'd like them but they smoke so well.

I have some RyJ WCs from March 2019, and they've been very hard to resist, they're smoking so well.

I've violated my "at least 2 years rest" rule with them.

I noticed that too. I have some singles from May 19 and they are indeed very tasty now. I may have to grab a 10 count to put away for aging to see how they change, and continue smoking these singles.

I have not had good luck with fresh smokes--they seem unbalanced and/or overpowering to my tastes (and that is when they have any taste at all 🙂 ).

The exceptions to that rule have been d4s, the Upmann half corona and the ERDM Demi Tasse.

The "exceptions to the rule" are exactly what I'm looking for! 😁👍🏽

HDM Rio Seco - could have just pulled the one stick that was good, but what I had was pretty spectacular.  Made me want to smoke another after I was finished.

@VKUTT I am on the other side of your thoughts when it comes to Partagas. That is the one marca I prefer to have young, I have D4s that I thought were out of this world with up to 2-3 years on the code, but just ok after that. The young D4 provides and earth and green pepper note that just fades as they age. My favorite young cigars are

Partagas Serie P no 2

Partagas Shorts

Partagas Serie D no 4

H Upmann Mag 46

H Upmann Half Corona

As far as marcas to age, I think Por Larranaga, El Rey del Mundo and Cohiba are the marcas that seem to benefit from the most age for me. Some of the best cigars I had the chance to enjoy fall into these three, below are some cigars that I thought had drastic (good) changes with age.

ERDM PC, Lonsdale, and Grandes de Espana

Por Larranaga PC, Lonsdale, and Panatela

Cohiba Coronas Especiales and Siglo IV

Seems a pretty academic debate at this point. :(

Least age currently:

Trinidad anything really

Hoyo Petit Robusto

RASS

Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill

SLR Regio

For me ERDM Demi tasse and most Cohiba benefit the most from ageing.

Which particular ones do you find smoke well in their youth? For me, only the Esplendido and sometimes the CoRo are approachable then.
