Popular Post mbflash80
bummer for sure...I was raised in LA and there was no denying the shadow that EVH cast on young guitar players growing up in the 80s...a true legend and in my book the most innovative player of all time

Islandboy
I remember exactly where I was and who I was with when I first put needle to vinyl on their debut album. Mind blown. This officially makes 2020 the worst year ever.
wineguy
RIP Eddie Van Halen. One of my first concerts. High School staple blaring out of the cassette deck and aftermarket speakers in my Mom's old 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass 4 door. Brown with a tan top and one grey door.

NSXCIGAR
Wish he had been more productive in the last 20 years. Their quality level while active was remarkably high. Very high success to dud ratio despite the different directions he took. Undeniably, the most innovative and influential guitar player in history, an outstanding songwriter and very good all-around musician. Seems like his son is a great kid who loved him, so apparently a good father as well.

BuzzArd
Yeah, didn’t completely see this one coming. I knew he wasn’t in the best of health, but didn’t think he’d be gone this soon.

A tremendous band at their peak. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see them in that era. I can tell you that San Diegans still remember well the "Van Halen weekend" in 84 when they played three shows in a row on a Fri, Sat & Sun in May. The whole area was one big tailgate party with people from all over SoCal. While not at their creative peak, they were arguably the biggest act in the world at that moment along with Michael Jackson, who Eddie had just played with.
Popular Post gcman68
My EVH story. As a student in 92 VH was coming to college campus for a concert which I was asked to work security for the event. I was two weeks from graduating so I told my boss I would rather have gone out to a bar. In essence I preferred to trade a night out for a check I wasn't going to get for weeks. However, my boss said he needed me and I agreed on one condition I got to work the VH dressing room with a friend. To make a long story short I told a friend to bring a camera (a big no no I was willing to get all the blame for) so we could get a picture with him. So hours before the show he comes down towards the dressing room and we ask him for the photo and he completely blows us off in not a great way. So after the warm up, the show, the encore and an additional 30-40 minutes later EVH comes out of the dressing room and asks us if we wanted that picture. We were shocked and couldn't even reply and he said "you were the guys right?". We then eagerly said yes and he apologized and said he wasn't feeling well earlier and graciously got together with us for the picture. I was shocked he remembered two college kid security guards 4-5 hours earlier asked for a picture. I had a VH poster on my bedroom wall in high school and really liked the band so when I heard he passed it brought that memory back and I felt sad for his family and for all of us losing his talent so I lit up one of my favorite smokes in his honor earlier. In the few minutes we spoke he seemed like a genuine down to earth great guy.
BrightonCorgi
Listened to VanHalen II last night. That is my favorite or go to VH album when I need fix. That album has some ironic titles in light of Eddie's death. Does Wolfgang have the chops to play guitar? They could do another tour with Wolfgang on guitar and Mark Anthony back on base/

It would not be the same. 2

Sure, there are guys like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, John, 5, etc that could do some respectable renditions of Eddie's work, but I don't think the other members would have the stomach for it. Outside of a tribute show, this wouldn't fly.

crasmith
I had all of their albums. Saw them several times over the years. Loved their music and Eddie was second to Page for me. I still I’ll remember the shouts of Eddie! Eddie! Eddie, just waiting for him to take stage and electrify the crowd. He will be missed. I believe he's releasing an album playing all the instruments and singing. Obviously he can't play guitar like his father but he's an exceptionally gifted musician. Here he is on drums with Alterbridge. Kid can seriously drum.
