Has anyone else turned off or limited "the News"

Recommended Posts

Nothing wrong with that, especially social media news or cable news.

I check the Yahoo news page in the morning to see if the world's ended or the Embargo's been lifted and then maybe some local city/state news. Any other topic I'm interested in, I'll check a news aggregator I trust.

With just that, I find myself more informed than just about anyone around me.

8 months ago I asked my news junkie wife to turn the TV off. She has always incessantly watched the news across multiple channels and I'd had enough within a few days of the ratcheting up on the reporting of the virus.

So we came to an agreement. She can watch a couple of segments a day if I am in the vicinity. Beyond that, such as when I am otherwise occupied, she can watch as much as she'd like.

Avoiding constant media greatly enhances sanity and well being.

I believe I remember reading Taleb recommending ignoring the news, and I think he is one of the greatest thinkers of our age.

Anxiety significantly prohibits critical thinking, so if reading the news is giving you anxiety, you’re likely not as well informed as you think.

Yup!! No news and no social media (social media was the much bigger and harder one). I’m just focusing on what I can control and stopped letting my emotional state be controlled by something far out of my control. It’s phenomenal.

There is very little actual news on tv, it’s more opinions with an agenda for one side or the other. Can’t stand it and don’t watch it. Most of the time if I want news I’ll go CBC,BBC or NHK.

A long long time ago . Cop a bit for it and care none . I jump on here every day and few other cigar chat threads and that is it. Watch a few movies and a few other bits and pieces, music etc.

I stopped watching Korean news, since majority of them are complete yellow journalism like The Sun newspaper (dog rocket clicks obsessed reporters and media firms are everywhere in Korea). Now exclusively using TBS for getting detailed and accurate news (way better than majority of Korean news).

For foreign newspapers, I use The Guardian and Die Spiegel. Such a shame that most of shady Korean reporters and media companies don't even apologise or got punished even if they posted misleading fake news ?.

Completely and totally have shutoff broadcast news. I still read the paper of my choice because I can pick and choose, but my life is so much better shutting the other crap out.

For me, the late night shows that used to aim for comedy have just become political rants for an hour. I'm pretty middle of the road politically and if a joke is funny, I'll laugh, but they're not even trying to do comedy anymore.

Think about any mainstream newspaper article about cigars. How wrong was it? If so, how could they get a simple subject so wrong but on the front page completely understand foreign affairs and politics? ?

Never thought I’d see a reference to Murray Gell-Mann on FOH! I am close friends with his step-son. Brilliant guy, very fun guy to hang out with, may he rest in peace.

I don’t watch any TV other than sports and the Mrs doesn’t watch TV at all. I am in finance so I stare at Bloomberg screens all day and get my news there. Even Bloomberg is full of biased financial/political news but it’s a bit better than what you get on TV.

The constant updates and breaking news with very little depth or a view of a broader picture, while "news", I'm not sure how informative or useful it is.

John Green had a podcast called "The Anthropocene Reviewed", where he gave various human endeavors a rating on a 5 star scale.

His take on CNN and the drawbacks of constant news updates is pretty good.

Starts at 9:42 here and worth 10 minutes. His bit on "The Yips" at the start is good too.

I have switched off CNN as it is too biased, repetitive and US centric for my taste.

My morning ritual is a one hour cup of coffee and a tour of the news from Der Spiegel, BBC, Al Jazeera and the NYT plus some smaller sites like Politico, Vice and Cuban outlets.
I have always been interested in news ...

ahah  why!?  it's just starting to get good!.

I've found a few sources of news (across a range of political leanings)  who sort of specialise in filleting off the 'post truth era' blubber and provide the choice cuts.

It would be interesting to do a study into whether people hot boxing themselves with bias news can form a physical/mental addiction.     I remember hearing a radio piece years ago, surrounding the analysis of a naval officer and his decision making to shoot down a missile (that 50% had the signature of a enemy rocket, and 50% that of a friendly plane).  Anyway they did studies into the naturally releasing serotonin affects of making a decision you believe to be right, and how that commits you to move ahead and act, as you're affectively in a happy haze of your own confirmation.

Much like the maniacs I've met in the workplace that seem to be in a constant self induced high of their own autocratic behaviour, maybe those living in fake news echo chambers are have actually formed some sort of self releasing chemical dependance?

I am into week six of turning off all news feed information excluding a 45 minute session checking my feeds in the am. That's it for the day.

No radio/TV/Cable/net news.  Plenty of music in the background exploring different genres (excluding Springsteen as I have been scarred for life ;)).

It is quite liberating not seeing politicians everywhere or 24/7 Covid updates.

Highly recommended :D

I turned the news off several years ago...nothing but a bunch of hot air...

I haven’t watched the news in years. We don’t don’t have cable at home and glad for it. I do listen to current events podcasts and read several news sources online to keep up with things.

People I know that incessantly watch cable news seem to be angrier and more fearful about the state of our world than most other people in general , and I think cable news feeds into that.

It's awful in the UK, it's been slowly polarising for a while but now they've added in a constant stream of breaking news that is either misleading or a skim of what's really happening. Usually reported by an increasing number of news personalities that the shows are centred around.

I read something year ago saying that everything in the news is there to either make you angry or scared. I shrugged it off as borderline tin foil stuff but I can't argue against it much now. It's not always necessarily the information it's how it's presented too

I've switched it all off apart from Reuters now; how the news should be with dull facts and up to date information ?
