El Presidente
This was a recent Friday deck discussion and it was intriguing. Then again most things are on your 5th free pour Gin and Tonic. Who here has done a major career flip? Started in one direction, you were well entrenched....... and then at a certain age you just said 'screw it" and went in a whole new career tangent. How has it panned out for you? Would you recommend it to others and would you have done anything differently?

Popular Post NSXCIGAR
I used to do orangutan bondage porn in the late 80s. Got out when demand peaked. Current career is much easier on the thighs, although I miss those fuzzy guys... Life lesson: don't piss off a coked up orangutan. 2
Popular Post Babalouie
I definitely fall into this group. Was well into a career in corporate aviation. Great pay and benefits. Was just getting into the executive bonus pool as a department head. Hit the age of 29 and said ‘I cant keep this up without losing myself’. Office life was dragging on me. Gave 3 months notice and planned for going back to school. Got my degree in Landscape Architecture. Was given some solid opportunities with municipalities and Central Park, didn’t pay nearly as well, but allowed me to turn the outdoors into my office. 10 years later and i’m an arborist with one of the larger nationwide tree companies with an accelerated career path. Can’t imagine were i would be right now if i hadn’t made the move. One thing i would do differently is finding a solid mentor to help guide me through the new life i choose and not stumble as much along the way.
Popular Post Habana Mike
Started life in the restaurant business. Professional chef at 28 running a high end restaurant in tony Old Town Alexandria. After meeting and marrying my wife and starting a family, I switched over to being a computer programmer and the rest is history. Expect I could have likely done well in the restaurant game though the hours are long and it's very fickle. Glad I made the move. Has worked out very well for me.
mprach024
I used to manage men’s clothing stores out of college when I changed my previous plan of being a lawyer, and couldn’t figure out what do (suits and sportswear). Then I found myself selling tech hardware, slinging just about anything that wasn’t nailed down to any company in the yellow pages. Yada yada yada, now I work for one of the largest software companies in the world.
MIKA27
I haven't changed though I would love to. The problem is knowing and or finding something else and that's the hard part for me. Single parent and it's tough taking a risk to change. I know I'm unhappy in my current job. 1

Popular Post Chibearsv
Dropped out of college - dealt blackjack - was in pga apprentice program to be a shop pro - back to school, got my degree in operations management- worked the car business hoping to take over my father’s business- became a mortgage loan officer - ran telemarketing center for a large mortgage company - now for the past 28 years, I’m part owner of a full service mortgage banking company in charge primarily of capital markets. So yeah, there’s been changes but Ive found my place. I’m very happy although the business is stressful. Would I do anything different, nope. All my prior experiences gave me the skills I needed to run this “herd of cats”.

SmokyFontaine
I did in August. Left a really good paying job, and a company I played a key role in building, that then got acquired. Was probably on borrowed time as I really didn't want to make the new owners who showed really poor ethics, located in a country notorious for non-existent ethics and that I have huge moral objection to, more money. Started in a new industry and at about a month in realized I was really badly lied to about the profitability and performance of the company. Took a paycut thinking I would make it up on the backend if I could impact the business the way I thought I could. Worst professional decision of my life. Humility aside, I'm pretty good at what I do, but it's still really disappointing to leave a job I loved because of the acquisition, and go somewhere that is definitely NOT what it was portrayed as. The single positive is that I'm gaining experience that is more transferable than the niche industry I was in before. Personally and professionally, it has been gutting 😕 1
