I was passing by my local b&m yesterday and noticed they had just received a box of lgc md4, I've never had one but hear talking about it here and there. The cigars appear much more rugged than expected and unfortunately the owner has, in a moment of thoughtlessness, removed the outer cardboard box and thrown it out.

So there I am with the dilemma of getting a box that I know can be harder to find than others, but with unknown factory and date. Not having tried the cigar before also helps, but with factory and date info at least I could resell it later on if I happen to dislike it. I left without the box.

 

If you were in my position, would you have bought it? Can they be considered so good that one should buy no matter what? I know that is very subjective but at least that would be better than just deciding based on availability.

 

They are cheap-ish but this would have been my first full size box purchase. As for the b&m, that I frequently visit, it is listed as official habanos specialist so in my mind there are no issues of legitimacy etc.

Alright, thank you for your opinion on the matter. I was leaning towards risking it but my gut told be to check in with the veterans first

• If the provenance and condition were positive, then yes, because I enjoy the marca. However, a retailer that just received a single box, without over pack, of a cigar that hasn't seen retail in three years...remember, "no matter what" only  counts if they're authentic and in good condition otherwise it's a throwaway

• Honestly, I think one's first full box purchase should be of a cigar that they  have consistently enjoyed on multiple conditions. Otherwise, you're buying someone else's taste and not necessarily yours.

Very anxious to try it as they seem to get very good reviews and must be popular as I had to buy mine in a private sale as everywhere I looked online was out of stock

@smbauerllc just be cautious with your expectations. My 2018 box just became tolerable. They need to sit for a while more so than most cigars. I’m not saying don’t try one, just limit expectations and know they will blossom.

This has become more clear to me throughout the day. I will try and complete the purchase and then time will tell.

This is all very confusing to me. These things where available, for very reasonable prices, for years. They slow down production for a couple years and now they're the best cigar out there? $1000 for a box? You need your head checked.

I have a couple boxes, one purchased here, the other on the island. They're OK cigars, but I I'll take a well aged PLMC over a well aged No 4 every time. Especially at the massive price premiums the No. 4s are currently commanding. My 2014 box is still not where I would like it and the 2016 box has shown no improvement yet, at all. Meanwhile I have 8 different boxes of PLMC's (mostly island pickups) that I can choose from. 13's or 14's when I want that smooth sweet PL Magic. 16's or 17's if I want a little more back bone. At $76 a box, its hard for me to understand why anyone wouldnt just go the the PLMC. 

@Ites, if you have a bunch of cigars that are ready to smoke and the box is reasonably priced, go for it. But if you're hoping to grab a box that will wow you tomorrow, I would keep looking. Cuba rolls so many great small cigars, many of which smoke very well young. I would focus on many of those first. PC's are my favorite "smaller" size, but there are plenty of other similar sized cigars to choose from.

I have a box from 2016 where I have also discarded the outer cardboard box.  Luckily I purchased them from here.  I have no idea the factory code and doubt that it matters to be honest.  Hard to have a favorite factory code you are looking when the cigars don't exist in the first place

I don't ever plan on smoking mine.  I am just hoping I don't forget they are buried in the bottom again, or do I?

Mine is a 2017, so hopefully it will be fine after a little rest and acclimation from shipping

I agree that retail, they are too pricey for what they are.

Fortunately, everywhere I looked they were always out of stock so went with a private sale on another forum and got what I would consider an excellent price.

What IS the plan? We're talking about bundles of fermented leaves, rolled with a sole purpose in mind. Consumption through combustion. Burn EM!! If not, stop wasting the humidor space, prop open the box and throw them up on the mantle.

At "retail" they where $125 a box and SAT on shelves. Which is probably a big part of the reason HSA Stopped rolling them so frequently. 

I've purchased them at $125, but are they really worth the $50 premium over PLMCs? Not consistently enough for me.  They're different cigars for sure, but not that different. 

Its interesting. HSA Recently included the PLMC in their swath of price increases, but not the No 4. I'm long past trying to dig into the mind of HSA execs to figure out their logic, but its worth noting.

Lol, didn't realize that they didn't raise the prices of everything, based on seeing all my vendors recently raising their prices across the board

That's a spectacular price right now. I was referencing Yul Cigars Cuban pricing updates. The prices on the island are pretty well disjointed from prices anywhere else in the world. Thinking about it a little more, they actually dropped about 50% In "real" terms, when the new black market exchange rates are factored in, they are cheaper now than they've been in almost a decade!! Haha. I cant wait to get back down there!

I agree. I do really enjoy the cigar, and when I am on the island it can be a great 125 CUC box to buy. Would always buy singles at the hotel and smoke all week.
I recall Rob putting 2 box deals up not too long ago on clearance on mondays. They would sit and not even sell out sometimes. And he would put them at island prices too.
It’s ridiculous what people pay of them now and unfortunately they are driving up the prices no doubt. As the above said, people like what they can’t get. Just like the BCG. I recall Rob saying he wasn’t surprised they got cut as they weren’t a big seller. HSA cuts them and bang, everyone wants them. I do love a good BGC but not at the prices they command now.

I think the BCG is a great comparison. I'm glad I have a couple boxes of both BCG and No. 4s, I will happily smoke through all of them. I don't see myself restocking at the going rate though. I cant remember the last time I smoked one of either, I need to dig into the Humidors when I get home next week and grab one of each.
