Trinidad Vigia vs Topes vs Esmerelda?

Recommended Posts

I think the Topes and the Esmeralda are the closest to each other. I've had better results with the Topes personally but they're quite similar.

The Vigia is much fuller to my taste and probably a bit stronger, a little punchier. I haven't had one in quite a while since I was running into serious consistency issues with them around 17-18. Kind of walked away. But I hear they've been performing better lately.

Blend wise, I think the Vigia is more my style. But if you like true medium or a tad under the Topes and Esmeralda are the choice.

To my taste, the Vigia is the most “Trini” of the bunch and my favorite, but all are good and solid examples of the marca’s DNA.

Personally I find the Vigia a bit too mild and woody for my liking. Media Luna is closest to the Coloniales and has plenty of flavour. Esmeralda for me is a step above and still yet to try the Topes as it’s not really a size I tend to opt for.

I find the coloniales stronger than the vigia? who knows.

I like the Vigia the most. I've only had one esmeralda but it was ok, not great, not bad. haven't had a topes. But I generally can't go wrong with lighting up a coloniales, a vigia, or an esmeralda.

Wow, some are finding the Vigia milder than the Coloniales? I've always found the Coloniales the mildest Trini and Vigia the strongest. Have they lightened up on the Vigia lately?

I guess we can just all agree to get some Media Luna which many feel is the best Trini of all.

Perhaps in the minority here, but I find the Esmereldas (or perhaps the couple I’ve tried) to be fairly mild, not particularly intense in flavor, a bit bland for such a large cigar.  Topes had more of a woodier complexion, but overall similar to the Esmerelda.

Vigia I find to be closer to the Reyes or Coloniales in terms of Marca DNA.  I’d agree with @NSXCIGAR that of the three, strength goes Reyes>Vigia>Coloniales.  Haven’t had a fundie or ML (just got a box of ML recently), so we’ll see where it sits for me.

I second @NSXCIGAR on this and also found the Topes to be better (although I find this head and shoulders better than the Esmerelda). I loved the milk chocolate, light coffee, creamy smoke and put that Topes in my Top 10 of 2021.

Can't comment on the Vigia as I've not had one yet but if NSX reckons these are punchier than the Topes/Esmerelda, I'll definitely spring for a box...

I might have just gotten some good Esmeraldas. I'm aware there seems to be a lot of inconsistency with them and the Topes always seems to be a consistent performer. But as you, I do prefer the blend of the Topes.

As far as the Vigia, at least the last time I had one around 18 they were pretty full. But if people are saying they're lighter than the Coloniales, well, I don't know.

Vigia and Media Luna are two of my favourite sticks right now.

Media Luna is a bit stronger in my opinion but both are excellent, consistent and great sticks over all. I've probably smoked 10 Vigias and 5 Media Lunas in the last month. Never any draw issues and always consistent.

I have boxes of the Topes, Esmereldas and Coniales on the way so I'll report back once I try them all!

I should add I only smoked two of the Esmerelda's and they were nice, but the Topes just sung to me... I was out walking the dog, it was a great day and it left me with the feeling that I just needed to have another. Going to let the Esmerelda's rest and see if they also sing :)

I find the Vigias are light to medium body with full flavor.

The Esmeraldas, medium body with medium flavor.

The Media Luna, full body, full flavor.

I've only had one Topes, and it was medium body with medium flavor, much like an Esmeralda.

In terms of blend preference, I do like them all but if they made the Media Luna in a Esmeraldas size, that would be an ideal cigar for me.

Vigia all day …..not even a question …I’ve smoked many vigia, esmeralda, topes, media Luna ….Vigia blend is by far the most satisfying to me ….media Luna just not ready, esmy is amazing but a tad mild, topes not ready either …..you can get vigia 12s for damn near $100 cheaper than esmy/topes…..all round vigia

I love the Esmeralda and media Luna. I had a ML the other day and I must say, it beat the previous Esmeralda I smoked.
The Vigia are very good too, but I find them to have a pretty open draw and burn hot.
For me it’s Esmeralda >ML (not too far behind)> vigia.

Definitely depends on the box ….I’ve had boxes of Messi Luna with open draw and boxes of vigia with open draw ….and the opposite ……I don’t think it’s a vitola specific thing …do you think it may be ?

I like Vigia and Esmeraldas for different reasons "time". I've had a few topes but they didn't do anything for me. The Vigia is short, creamy but out way too fast for it's a nice lunch afternoon smoke for me but I'm sub an hour with it smoking it pretty slow. Esmeraldas for me is the best of the bunch. Cream/Vanilla flavors & great draw on most. If I have an hour plus to spend this is the Trinidad I reach for.

Side Rant: I just really wish they'd sell these in 25's instead of 12's. I'm not sure why they do but it would make life a lot easier.

I agree with this for the most part if it's in terms of strength (never had a Topes.though so I don't know about that) but would put Fundy last.

I should definitely have put the ML before the Fundy but I think the Fundys are a little fuller than the Coloniales, possibly just because there's more building towards the end.

Yes that's fair. I think the strength of a cigar on first lighting it leaves the greatest impression on me, so it's hard for me to think of most long cigars as strong since they start out so weak.

I have smoked through many boxes of each of these, except the Topes, which I have only smoked through maybe 4 or 5 boxes.  In those 4 or 5 boxes of Topes, I have not been wowed by any of them.  I don't really get it because the Esmeraldas are one of my favorite cigars, and the Media Lunas are not far behind the Esmeraldas in the flavor department.  But for whatever reason, the Topes lack the flavor of the other two, and just taste like burnt tobacco to me.

Before the creation of the new 3 Trinidads, I smoked the Vigias fairly often.  Love the flavor of these cigars, but the size is not ideal for me.  The are short and really fat, so they burn hot and fast, and often, just as they are starting to get amazing, you are already at the nub.  Again, love the flavor, but they really should be longer than they are.

Awesome, thank you.... and can I come over  😄

Sure.  I am only 4 streets away from you.

From SF, take Route 80.

After about 2,900 miles, you will see a sign for Route 280 toward the Lincoln Tunnel.

Go to the second exit.

Take that road about 2 miles to my street.

See you in 3 days (if I don't get pulled over for driving 100 mph)

This.

I've been stacking MAR-coded Vigia boxes for around $200. Pure Trini class & DNA. Also the 19 Pinar del Rio coded boxes are already smoking lights out.

Topes sizing is a lil obnoxious to me, the others are just simply overpriced IMO

Also, why are Fundys so weak in the past few years?

Have you noticed a significant difference in the MAR coded versus others? I have two boxes - ARS NOV 17 and RAG NOV 17 and don't like either.  Profile in both boxes is rather flat, quite dry.  I'd say both boxes are underfilled as well.
