Movie Franchises... where they should have stopped... where they maybe should have gone on...

Agree on Papillon.  But even if the new Dune sucks, it’s better than the original. And the remake of True Grit was terrific. Mostly I agree with you though.

I think we could have done without Indiana Jones 4...

Terminator didn't need more after T2.  Predator didn't need sequels either.

JAWS = Yes 2 = Meh 3D = 🤢 The Revenge = 🤮

Did you watch the new Dune yet? I feel this is different because of how bad the original sucked…and because it’s an interpretation of a novel. Yes…I agree there are exceptions to the rule, but mostly abhorrent concept.

Haven’t seen the new Dune yet but I’m confident in my statement 😂

I feel 75% confident it was a good movie and 25% confident I am being tricked by how aesthetically pleasing it is.

Surprised the Daniel Craig as James Bond has not come up yet. I've enjoyed most of them.

I can't get enough of Jason Bourne movies.

I was waiting for someone to bring up Bond!  Casino Royale I very much enjoyed. Ranked up there with the classic Bond films for me. The other Craig ones had their moments. Overall solid run. Far worse ones in the Bond universe.

With the amount of rehashed comic superhero movies over the last 15 years the answer to your question is clearly no.

I think we can all agree that the best sequel of all time is Empire Strikes Back. After that, things get hazy.  Some are just watchable (Jaws 2, Fletch Lives, Lethal Weapon 2, Another 48 Hours, Christmas Vacation) and others abysmal (Caddyshack 2, Ghostbusters 2, Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason).  Remakes are similarly dicey (Get Carter (cringeworthy), Italian Job (I refuse to watch the Marky Mark one) and Thomas Crown Affair (mildly entertaining with Denis Leary) and generally difficult to watch.  I’m not a big fan. No matter how corny, let the original be sacred (Point Break, looking your way here).  They didn’t do Clint Eastwood any favors with any of the Dirty Harry sequels.

Unpopular opinion perhaps but for me it is weakened by the inconclusive ending, which is followed by the weaker next film.

Terminator 2 was a great sequel.

But Terminator 2?

Maybe not best sequel of all time. But seems like a case where both the original and the sequel are very good movies in their genre, and the second probably preferred by many.
Edit: And the movies stand on their own.

Tamping down the testosterone somewhat:

The Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight trilogy should have stopped at 2.

Lost In Translation should have had a number of sequels.  Bob's decline as a star; his family relationship; his relationship with whisky; Charlotte's own journey.  And they never meet again until the last movie.  Takes a better man than me to write this saga.

Would like to have seen a waterworld sequel. Movie got such a bad rap but was, and is still,  a fun watch for its time

Jumper. Watched it servral times (and still entertaining) and really wish that story and cast could have contunued

Fast and furious should have drove off into the sunset years ago

And i hate to say it, but marvel wont be collecting any more money or time from me... good run but im out on mcu

The three greatest sequels of all time are Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, and Terminator 2.

Agree that T2 and Aliens were better than originals and probably the best sequels, both series should have stopped there.

If counting Trilogy’s/Sagas, Empire is right up there, but I would also add The Two Towers, to me that’s still the best of the Tolkien movies.

Dumb and Dumber 2 (and that shitty prequel), Anchorman 2, Speed 2, Super Troopers 2, Weekend at Bernies 2, and all subsequent VanWilder movies are all sequels that had no business being made.

Original Oceans 11 (1960) a  bit hmmm.. dated for me, but cast Sinatra , Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Peter Lawford -just getting them together was special.

Oceans 11, 12, & 13 we’re pretty good with modern technology and great plots. Clooney, Pitt, Damon -modern day ‘Brat pack??’

should have ended at 13..

Oceans 8 ?? Nuff said.

*For the sequels to Jaws, Ghostbusters, Predator, and especially Godfather 3, yes I'm in total agreement about the unentertaining, abysmal results. However, there are some sequel hits like Terminator 2, Superman 2, and Aliens under James Cameron's guidance. WHAT were they thinking (apart from MoneyMoneyMoney) with Aliens 3??? BLEHH!! :thumbsdwn: But despite what I anticipate will be the reaction of you macho, he-man, male specimens out there - the Twilight Saga with Edward, Jacob, and Bella was spot on GREAT!! All five sequels were on target, just like an on-going soap opera. And THEY STOPPED after Breaking Dawn 2 because that was the end of the series, although I'm pretty sure they've been getting hit with executive studio offers for more. For those of you familiar with the series - they should have Leah imprint on a vampire!!!  :P

Better than starwars....

2 & 3 were ......only slightly better than starwars

Starship Troopers (1997) - IMDb

i did love this, but not ahead of star wars (well, stars wars and empire - everything else was rubbish).

mind you, the book of starship troopers is so different.

wouldn't bond have only come up if people were not enjoying them, given the title of the thread?

thoroughly enjoyed all the bourne except the jeremy renner one. i must say that when i heard matt damon was playing bourne - i'd read all the books - i could not see it for a moment. but it worked.

as for the latest bond, very mixed for me. certain a terrific film but so many holes and reservations in the overall scheme of things.  spoilers follow.

Q gay? Definitely not what Fleming had in mind. I did love the line about ‘you can get them with fur now’, about his cat.

I collected quite a few reviews – I never read them till I have seen the film. Fascinating to see what they had to say after you’ve seen the film. Some had this as the greatest Bond film ever. Some had it as a disaster that was one of the very worst. I would have it quite high as a film – not up to Casino Royale or Skyfall. But good. But a few things that I had huge reservations about. And too many things just not answered or even addressed. How did the bionic eye work or get there? Bond arrives in Cuba by boat but then Felix is waiting on a ship for him to fly there. How did they know? Lots of little holes. Getting rid of Blofeld and Spectre so easily and conveniently? No, that did not work. And this villain was basically a boring little man trying to sound sinister. How did he build his army? Too many things unaddressed.

And as for the bit with Bond and Madeline and Bond is saying how he has always loved her and so on, give me a break.

They met for two days before this film – in Spectre. First day, she hated him. Then there is a fight on the train and it is off to bed. The 2nd day, they sit at a train station in the desert not talking and then fighting Blofeld before escaping in London. They go to Italy where Bond is just so in love with her that he is there to visit Vesper’s tomb. And when it blows up, he immediately blames her and they do not see each other for five years. And yet the world’s most confirmed bachelor is suddenly declaring how much he loves her? Spare me. Plus she is as dull as maths. As one review pointed out, sparks flew with Bond and Vesper. Bond and Madeline were a damp squib.

The one thing they all agreed on was that Ana Arnol or whatever her name was, was terrific. She really was. All too brief. By chance, I had just watched ‘Knives Out’ on Netflix which also stars them both, but she is a young caregiver for Christopher Plummer (must have been his last film) and Daniel Craig was an old southern detective. The age gap could not have been bigger in that film.

but the biggest absolute stuff-up for me is to give Bond a kid and then kill him. how does that work for the next film? they just happen to find another spy called james bond and give him the number? how does it work for the back story fleming established? wrong move. badly wrong.

but i did love all the little references to the pre-Craig 007 films. good fun.

That actually brings up another interesting topic of what are the best/worst movie adaptions of books. While twilight wasn't aimed at my demographic I think they did a good job compared to the books. I couldn't make it past book 1, but watched all the movies for some reason.

On the other hand I read the Lord of the rings but wasn't crazy about any of the movies.

I read all the Harry Potter books, but again wasn't crazy about the movies. I wasn't that crazy about the books either (though I think books 5 and 6 were good).

To me in general novellas do very well as movie adaptations. I think Fight Club and the Shawshank Redemption were definitely better as movies than as books.

I've heard it said that death in Venice was similar.

There is one undisputed (I should imagine) king in the "should have stopped category" - Godfather 3. :cowpoop:

With the already tainted Ghostbusters series about to get another instalment - I think GB Afterlife is due out in the US this week? - and The Matrix 4 in the pipeline... Top Gun: Maverick in 2022... will we be doing this :perfect10: or this :moon: ?

What are your thoughts on how these and any others will fare? The best and worst of franchises and their instalments? And what about a single movie or franchise you think should have had another crack but didn't?

Post em up! :cigar:

I am sorry but I still believe this is one of the best conceived lines in the history of film.  It can be applied to many things in life, take 24:24 for instance :)
