I'm glad the Prez took our advice... thanks Rob!

I'm a big rum drinker. My favorite rum is the Havana Club 15yr Gran Reserva (which is no easy feat to get here in the US), followed by the Havana Club 7yr old Anejo and from Guatemala Ron Zacapa Centenario. I don't beleive you can go wrong with any of these.;-)

I'd like to know what are some rums that other members have had either on the rocks or in a mixer that they have enjoyed.

That's what's great about Cruzan , the price. The Cruzan Single Barrel Reserve just got rated the highest rating out of all aged rums, including havana club: The top 10 were: (out of 1000 point sys

In the UK, it is easy to find Havana Club and the 7 year is easy to find and inexpensive at under £20 - available at most supermarkets. Whereas Ron Zacapa 23 Solera is £53 at Tesco! Sounds like it is

Wow...so many great rums. You name a few favorites. Rum is pretty much what I drink with cigars. And I drink it like water. I think i need it the function on the daily. A few beers outta the 'ol kegerator now and then, but 99.99% its rum.

Some Favs:

Zacapa 23

El Dorado 15 yr

Santa Teresa 1796

Havana Club Anejo Reserva (just tried my 1st bottle and LOVE it...Thanks 'o faithful leader;-) )

Zaya

Neisson Rhum Agricole Vieux (best of the best)

Pampero

On the "buy" list:

Any other Cuban rums

10 Cane

Zacapa 30 (cant seem to find it)

My main 2 ways of drinking Rum is on the rocks or with a splash of OJ. Mojitos I love..Of course i like the occasional "fruity" frozen drinks when its summer and im grillin and chillin by the pool with a cigar in hand. I can make a killer Pina Colada. Im sure most know what the secret ingredients are, but here go:

Dark premium Rum

Coco Lopez Cream of Coconut

ice

banana(optional)

whole milk

Fill blender half with rum. 3/4 can of Coco Lopez. Banana. Top with a bunch of ice and 1/2 cup milk. Enjoy.

Nice choices. You've named all of my favorites except for the HC Cuban Barrel Proof. I prefer the Barrel Proof over the Gran Reserva because of the extra bite from the higher alcohol content (also because it is about $100 cheaper:-D ). IMHO, the Ron Zacapa is the smoothest rum of all, but the aroma doesn't even come close to that of the HCs which are just heavenly. You can't beat that pure caramel aroma that emanates from the Havana Club rums.

CIGARHead, it was you that got me started on my current Rum kick. In the last 2 weeks, I have bought the following:

Zaya

Pyrat

A while back it was Barbahn Court 15 year old. I NEVER realized just how wonderful rums are until I tried these. I have a feeling I am going to be in trouble. I would like to locate the HC (Havana Club?) somewhere here in Delaware. I also ran across the Ron Zacapa, but I didn't purchase it. Went back to the store and now they are out of stock. Won't make that mistake again!:-D

I must say, out of the three listed here, I think the Pyrat is the sweetest/smoothest. The Barbahn Court is the harshest... if one could say that. The Zaya falls in the middle. Outside of the taste, the thing that I really love about these rums is the smell. That smell of caramel is wonderful. Thanks for getting me started down this slippery slope known as rum.:ok:

I like rum, but don't love it enough to seek out the extra good stuff.

(Maybe I would if I tried some). So, in general, I stick with my usual -

Gosling's Black Seal. I've also enjoyed Appleton Estate's various offerings,

but don't search for it anymore either.

Maybe the next time I'm out partaking, I'll try some of the rums mentioned here.

Cruzan is a good inexpensive rum. Zaya and Zacapa for higher end stuff. I like Appleton and Goslings a lot as well. Never had the Havana Club.

If I had to select only 1 Cuban rum and label it my favorite -(at least at the moment this is written ) it is Ron Varadero Reserva 15 Anos.

This is a delicious rum....and compared to what other 15 yr Cuban Rums sell for - this is a GREAT bang for the buck as well !!!

Being that my family is from Jamaica, I have a lot of experience with rum and it is the first thing I reach for when smoking. Having said all that, my favotites are Appleton 18 yo and 21 year old, Barbancourt 8 yo and 15 yo, Cockspur VSOR, Mount *** Extra Old. Ron Z 23. Many more great ones, but those are a nice start :)

» Zacapa 30 (cant seem to find it)

»

It's called the Zacapa Centenario XO 25 Years and it is impossible to find in the states. I've been able to find it in Europe but they won't ship to the US.

If anyone knows where I can find it let me know...

was always and still am a fan of the hc 15 but i have never had one come close to the santiago de cuba. it was a 10,000 bottle release with 20 plus years on all the material. still see a few bottles around cuba if you are there (have tried so hard to get a bottle or even a taste of the one they make for castro to give as a diplomatic gifts but never even seen it). the santiago is alcoholic cream. was originally US$100 and usually still around $90 (rum seems to have come down a bit in cuba, wish the cigars would). i got another bottle on the last trip in the store off el ajibe for $60 so very happy:-D

we did some tastings in cuba comparing the hc 15 with a few of the other premiums and as good as the hc was, it came in behind the rest (still fabulous), just that the others all even smoother and more complex).

it is like alcoholic cream. mate picked something up at a specialist rum store in new york that he is raving about but i'm yet to try it.

did a big comparative rum tasting at home about a year ago (with about 25 rums) and if i can find it, will post results. perhaps time to do it again as i have a few to add.

one cuban cheapie that is fabulous is the caney oro. about $6 and it is a lighter style cracker. hamlet put me on to it and seems he knows his rum as well as he does his cigars.

i'm down to my last bottle and a half of the santiago - it is going to be a rationed winter.

Guest boss hogg

Shooter turned me on to Zacapa 23yo and it's FANTASTIC stuff.

However, having previously spent a lot of time in Puerto Rico, I have to tip the hat to Don Q Cristal (white) rum for everyday drinking and mixing. Try mixing it with Pepsi as an alternative to the traditoinal Cuba Libre of rum 'n coke. Smooth and sweet.

This topic got me buying some new rum to try out. Barbancourt three star rum, Mount *** Extra Old, Appleton Dark Deluxe. Maybe someone can give me some feedback on these? Plus the only drink I've made with rum is rum and coke :-D I'd really like to try something else too. Can someone recommend me one or several fairly easy drinks made with rum?

I've been drinking rum for many years, but have just recently started actually drinking GOOD ones.

Some of my favorites so far:

HC7 - Cuba

Ron Santiago - Cuba

Pyrat XO - Anguilla

Flor de Cana - Nicaragua

St. James - Martinique

Mt. *** - Barbados

Bacardi Select - Puerto Rico (I think)

The last two are the only ones I can find in the podunk town I live in. I have to order the others online.

Being from Guatemala I am partial to these RUms:-D

Ron Zacapa Centenario 23

Zaya

I also enjoy the HC 7

Gossling's Black Seal is surprisingly good for an inexpensive rum. I'm going to Bermuda next month & will certainly try their reserve rum.

My favorite, though, is Varadero Club 7 Anos. It's a little sweeter than Havana Club & very smooth. Hard to find outside Cuba.

In terms of creamy armagnac style rums, might I suggest:

Matusalem (Nicaraguan)

Oronoco (Brazil)

La Flor De Cana (Nic?)

The Zacapa 25 Centarrio XO is more full bodied and complex. Very good.

Had 10 Cane and disliked it. Had a sharp taste to it - almost like it ran into some cachaca on its way. Maybe in a Cuba Libra.

The HC Cask strength is quickly becoming my favorite though.

I'll have to tip in and second (twentieth?) the Zaya and Zacapa.

Pampero is good also. Pyrat XO and Cask 23 is also excellent.

I can't stand HC-ANything. Tastes like diesel to me ;)
