TJtorpedo
Wow, I've got to catch up on my rums. I thought I was doing well drinking Goslings and Appleton! I haven't yet experienced a nice aged sipping rum.

SeanGAR
Wife is Venezuelan so I drink mainly rums from there. Santa Teresa Anejo and Solera 1796 Pampero Anejo and Aniversario Calcique Anejo and 500 Diplomaticos Most of the straight anejos are in the 3 dollar range down there. 1796 was something like 13 bucks. Their cigars are not as good as their rums, but I found one that was actually decent for a small one-dollar smoke.

Crazy how cheap these rums are in their home country. **** the ST 1796(one of my favs) here is $35-40 bones!
Fia
» I'm glad the Prez took our advice... thanks Rob! » » I'm a big rum drinker. My favorite rum is the Havana Club 15yr Gran » Reserva (which is no easy feat to get here in the US), followed by the » Havana Club 7yr old Anejo and from Guatemala Ron Zacapa Centenario. I » don't beleive you can go wrong with any of these.;-) » » I'd like to know what are some rums that other members have had either on » the rocks or in a mixer that they have enjoyed. I have tried the HC15 once and thought it was excellent. Good rum is hard to find in Hawaii and I usually have to score it from the mainland. I used to like Pyrat but I have heard bad things recently that the quality has gone down. Ron Zacapa is excellent and Im still working on a bottle. While on vacation in Cali, I picked up a bottle of Zaya and Ron Matusalem. I like the Zaya and think it is sweeter than the RZ but not as sweet as the Pyrat (at least the old pyrat). Havent tried the Ron Matusalem yet. Any thoughts on that one?:-)

Mr Peat
Not much of a rum drinker but while in Honduras, I got to try Flor de Cana 4yo Gold. Its pretty darn good for rum. I picked up a bottle down there for like $5 and in the USA it can run upto $30 if you find it. We, the group that the the tour of a cigar factory, didnt suffer from any ill side effects the next day. Yes, we did consume a bunch of this rum.
Erol
I really like HC 7 yr I only saw HC 15 yr at the airport and by that time I ran out of pesos, it was 85 CUC this past may, i'd love to try it! I like appleton's rums. I tried the 21 yr and I love it. Though I can't affort a bottle i'll settle for extra (12 yr). I can't stand bacardi or not a fan of Cap Morg. I like hearing these "obscure" names from you gentlemen, makes me want to go out and try some!
DrAlejandro
while I was living in the Dominican Republic I found a gem of a rum called siboney reserva... damn good and I believe I only paid about 4 bucks a bottle for it
Wil
I'm no aficionado, but got a bottle of Ron Varadero (7 yo) in Cuba last year and it's the best I've had so far.
josie67
Been powering through a bottle of Zacapa XO that I got a few days ago....so good I bought another bottle of the XO plus a bottle of El Dorado 15 and 21.
josie67
Just got the Zacapa XO, El dorado 15, and El Dorado 21 today, and my wife and I had a little rum tasting. The zacapa has been reviewed already, so no review here. We did a blind taste with the two El Dorados.....The 15 was fantastic with a hint of spice, caramel, and an unusual flavor I couldn't place.....don't even know how to describe it, but it came and went super fast. The 21 was also fantastic, with a heavier body, less spice, more caramel and vanilla flavors. In the end, my wife picked the 15 as her favorite in the blind test, and I picked the 21. BOTH were fantastic though! I have to put the El Dorado 21 at the top of the list even above the Zacapa XO (but not by much).
stargazer14
I bought a bottle of Bacardi Solera last week, i have not seen it mentioned on the forum and maybe i know why. As a not too expensive rum, it's not too bad, but i find myself wanting to mix it, so it ranks not so high in my book. I think the the most problematic part for me is the finish - there is almost none, except for maybe some off-flavored alcohol. I love a good finish. Think I'm gonna go grab a shot of Zacapa and wash this taste out of my mouth....

samb
Ive been reading up on rum on this site, and just in general, and at first I really enjoyed Sailor Jerry... Next trip to the liquor store may see bottle of the famed Zacapa in my possession. Im curious about all the hype.
stargazer14
Samb, i said it before - I like Sailor Jerry, its the rum i keep on the boat so it has gone with lots of great times. And I wouldnt say the talk about about Zacapa is hype, if you like a finer rum, this one will make you say- "Nice!" Worth the splurge to have a bottle around. thechenman
I've mentioned in many posts that you can't go wrong with Zacapa...but when I wan tto go with a rum that is a bit less sweet and a bit more floral...I reach for the Pyrat XO. You guys should give that a try as well.
stargazer14
I have tried Pyrat and it didnt leave a big impression with me - tho i will say, the bottle i had looked different than what i see in the store here. maybe the 350ml bottle is just different and not the rum. I had his:
thechenman
Hmmm...Interesting...Haven't see Pyrat in that type of bottle before. It does not look like the Pyrat XO though. Anyone more familiar with this bottle...feel free to chime in.
Jimmy2
Diplomaticos get it already you will not be disappointed been saying it for years and yes it better if not head to head with Zacapa ...
perfectform
Diplomaticos get it already you will not be disappointed been saying it for years and yes it better if not head to head with Zacapa ... Agreed Jimmy. Both are great rums and great values compared to other spirits. But the Zacapa XO is an absolute must, if only for special occasions...or not.
