Ah, cicadas....they just don't shut up. They are LOUD and this is their season. They lose their hard outter shell, and then sit up in the trees making noise. Every now and then, if I'm out at night having a smoke, one will fly around, they get BIG, and can really freak you out if they smack into you. The dog loves to eat them. She also likes eating the hard shell they leave behind. I don't know if they burrow into the ground, but it seems to be the case, as often she digs around a bit, and hten walks over chomping on one.

SOrry for the threadjack.

This is quite interesting!

They do get huge and when one flies into your head, it hurts. I can't believe your dogs eats these things. But then again, the Chinese collect cicadas in their larval stage (I think) and use them for medicinal purposes in soups and stuff. My mom and grandma used to make this soup and I still remember biting them in half.

At this stage, I think they lay eggs in the ground and the larva attach to tree roots and suck for 16 some odd years before emerging as another generation of flying cicadas.

» Is the source of these cigars a guy from Omaha?

not to be confused with the guy from Nebraska City... ;-)

What was that guy's name again?
