Cap construction

OK...this is the kind of stuff that runs thru my head as I am sitting by the pool, watching the kids swim and fight and smoking a Boli RC....I have seen this on many CC's and dammit it's time I figured this out ! I clip the cap..took off slightly more than the very end cap...and there is this BB sized ball of tobacco stuck right in the middle. I have seen many like this , It will actually come out intact and leave a round divot in the end of the cigar. So the million dollar question,,,what the hell is this little ball for ? Is it just to give me something to ponder while I am enjoying my smoke or I was thinking (dangerous) this may be a way to slow down the draw on an imperfect cigar ? I did notice smoke emanating from that divot and thought maybe they throw that in to slow it down. OK so much for the deep thought...anyone have any other ridiculous ideas ?

The divot I understand as it is a hallmark of top rollers. Some use it, some don't as a "signature" (Hamlet is always very detailed in his explanations  ).

Only top rollers leave a divot but not all top rollers do.

I was fortunate to tour the Partagas factory in late January this year. Many thanks to Rob and Jose Candia for their help on this adventure!!!

What i noticed when saw them appling the cap was interesting. When she was finishing the wrapper, she twisted the end like a pigtail, then took a tool that look like a pen, and shoved the pigtial into the cigar. Like a punch effect. Then she cut her peice for the tripple cap , wrapped it. then applied the final end peice of the cap. I believe what you are noticing is the end of this pigtail after clipping the end.

Most of the time when i just slightly clip the cap, i get this end piece that from the underside (inside towards the cigar) has this twisted effect. I beleive that is what the ball is you are noticing.

I actually have a video i did inside the factory of this exact application, and the finishing of a piramide cigar as well. Great videos jst 20 - 40 seconds long. Wish i knew how to post them.

A secret i had to keep at the advice of Jose Candia...........i have photos of the Maduro 5 on the sorting table no bands. Jose just said they where having a discussion about a new release at the Habanos Festival, so we hd to wait in the VIP room while this meeting adjurned, then return to ths area to finish our tour. Great stuff guys, i will try to figur out how to post this stuff.

Sorry for going off subject a little.........good excited remembering my trip!!!!

Thanks for the links! I think it may now be safe to conclude that the "divot" is an

intentional construction element.

I had a similar experience with a box of Partagas S D1 ELs and asked the dealer about it and just reconfirming what others have already said, that it is the hallmark of a good roller...and they are really well constructed cigars as well as really great smokes.

That was very informative..I've wondered the same myself! I think it's a pen, too..looks like the BIC-style stick pens from a few years back, the type with the tapered cap!
