Enjoyed this TOU SEP 17 Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo Du Depute yesterday after lunch. 

First time, so paired with an Aranciata, which was adequate, but I advise regular orange juice which seems to bring out flavors that much more.

 It was medium bodied, and to my taste buds cedar and a mix of floral flavors underscored by a subtle sweetness. Final third had some black coffee come into play. Had a creamy texture throughout which was very enjoyable on a hot day (90F). 

I have one more thanks to @blakeLA and will be looking forward to trying it again after a few weeks rest.

Really man? Sorry to hear that. I've had two so far. One was really good and the other was like a 96/100 maybe even 97. Smoked it down to the nub. Didn't overheat. Plenty of complexity. One of my fav this calendar year so far.

Punch Punch UBM Ago 2018

The Punch Punch, for me, embodies what makes Habanos cigars unique and distinctive from cigars made from other regions in the world. Some call it a 'Cuban twang', others define the term as 'Cubanesque', but no matter what you call it, I'd like to think that the (volcanic) soil which makes the Vuelta Abejo region stand out for its tobacco, and is evident in Habanos cigars in varying degrees, is so eminently enjoyable in a Punch Punch, and especially in the last 5 years or so.

Punch Punch can be described as having wood, cream, clove, spice and even nut or floral flavours, at times, but the last few I've had, including the one from the 2018 FoH Xmas Sampler (which I rated the best of the twelve), have been full of that 'Cuban twang' I've mentioned above.

And so what is this 'Cuban twang'? I best describe it as a sour citrus tart flavour and in this Punch Punch, it had a gorgeous creamy texture to it as well. Wood or cedar and spice was not really as obvious as other Punch Punch I've enjoyed in the past, but it didn't matter, as this cigar was simply outstanding, it was everything you'd hope for from a run-of-the-mill regular production cigar. For when they are like this, well then, you can keep your Limited and Regional Editions on the shelf, for this is all you need.

There are many Habanos cigars that enthusiasts advocate to rest (or age) to develop into a peak period. Even when you are eager to get into a box and sample it, it's again usually advised to rest them in a humidor for 30 to 60 days and then 'dry box' for a few days. Well, for this Punch Punch cigar I will admit to you that I threw all that advice, which I commonly espouse to, out the proverbial window. Eight months old and the cigar was in my humidor for 3 days...is that not, by definition, what is meant by 'right-off-the-truck' (ROTT)? It just goes to show that there is no 'one-and-fast' rule to enjoying Habanos cigars when it comes to resting them and for me this is just another characteristic of what makes this hobby so wonderful and interesting.

@JohnS's review from a couple of hours ago inspired me to grab this punch punch. Unknown box code as it was a freebie received back in January. John absolutely nailed the flavor profile. Excellent write up as usual brother!

I took this ABO ABR 18 Mag 46 out of the humidor last Friday. It felt like a tent peg so I left it out hopefully that dry boxing would help. I decided to have it last night and it still felt like a tent peg. Turns out it was near perfect construction and draw. Best one by far out of a box that has been hit or miss so far. As soon as I was done I took another one out to have later in the week.



After a long day at a leadership conference I’m relaxing with a Monsdale. These continue to be the best, most consistent long and skinny customs coming out of Cuba.

Not my usual morning smoke, but I wanted to check in on this box of EPM ABR 18 Connie As. Surprise! Too young. Burn a bit ragged, but the real problem was that the creamy, nutty Upmann flavours have not developed yet, and it just came across as rather generic. Away they go for a few years.

Second attempt. LGC D no.5 ER Espana BOP DIC 17. Yowza. Really interesting smoke. High floral tones and balsa wood, flashes of lemon and lime peel (v unusual), touch of cumin and a rapidly building body. Got quite spicy by halfway, and it’s slow smoking for a short robusto. Would love to have more of these, but alas it’s my only one.

Monte 2.  Tried the orange juice and didn't notice any marked differences.  Will try again. Cigar started out heavenly - coffee, smooth, no harshness to speak of.  The 2nd half was a bit of a roller coaster between bitterness and baking spices.  Of note, construction was one of the best I've ever had with a CC. Only had one ash drop off over the whole cigar.

Mild Mild CT Shade DR Morning.

Been keeping this in the humidor for less than a year; started off with light cedar. No bite or pepper to this cigar, which I don’t mind since it’s a morning smoke for me.

Also getting notes of cherry and slight peanut butter. Tons of smoke output. Draw is perfect.

 

Second third: hay, cedar, and smooth. Still ton of smoke. No issues with the burn

Budget Combo: RASS + Gas Station Coffee. Pairs better than most because the weak coffee doesnt interfere with my palete like burnt ass starbucks.

Been having trouble with my humidity with the season change. Working on adjusting to get it back down to 62%/70F. Forcing me to dry box at the moment. In Colorado, 40% humidity is considered muggy and 20% is a norm, so dry boxing is risky business and delicate wrappers don't appreciate it that much (note the unraveling cap). Rass was good though.

Just from mental notes: First half: black pepper, dark fruits, leather with some coffee and cream. Second half gave way to the herbal notes leading the battlefield, cream, soft saltiness and hay. Stayed medium-full the duration.
