Great show, gets a little slow in late season 3, early season 4, stick with it and power through you’ll be rewarded.

Very nice day! Early Christmas present from my significant other. She hates the cigar smoking but puts up with it. We ran across a new old stock St Dupont and she pulled the trigger. Early Christmas indeed. Broke it in on a Lusitania. Let the Holiday break begin.

About three years ago I bought 3 10 count boxes of BUP SEP 17 Lusi’s in Havana. The first two boxes were a bit hit and miss but the first out of this third box was great. Here’s hoping the other 9 are just as good.

So, I got a box of BBFs earlier this year from Jul19.  I first opened and looked at them and said....crap, those are the lightest dullest looking BFFs I’ve ever seen.  Picture doesn’t even show it properly, pretty much Claro wrappers.  While I might like that in a Monte or Cohiba, it’s never been my preference in Boli.  Tonight I figured I’d fire one up.

Initial Impressions after Light:  construction doesn’t look pretty but it’s flawless, perfect draw, no hard spots, but not much flavor to note.

First Third:  creamy, and a bit floral...some notes of forest floor.  Honestly not incredibly interesting and what I feared.  Mild is an understatement.

Second Third:  Well now this is interesting....very creamy, now there’s loads of hay, still hints of floral, any forest is replaced by a light bodied coffee, and the finish is a blast of sugar cane sweetness.  Like a cup of coffee with cream and a couple teaspoons of sugar.  Nothing resembling Bolivar here, if you blindfolded me I’d have guessed a Trinidad, and yes that’s a good thing.  Just under medium still.

Final Third:  honestly where the hell was this rolled?  This is not a Bolivar.  If I’m craving a BBF this is not what I’d reach for, but crazy, this is wonderful.  Reviewing for what it is versus what I’m expecting or wanting, it’s a terrific smoke.  So creamy, mild coffee, loads of hay still, touch of floral, and a strong sugary sweetness, not honey, and not dark sugar or molasses.  Still just under medium.  Construction and burn are near perfect, one touch up required.  What’s this sound like to you?  
 

Final Thoughts:  I could smoke these daily, put a brand new band on it and I’m sure this marca would gain a following.  If the whole thing were like the final 2/3 it’d be a 94 point cigar to me, so I’ll give it a 92/93.  
 

A very nice surprise but will definitely make notes that this basically isn’t a Bolivar.

Crazy. I had a similar experience with this BBF tonight @mprach024  Not what I expect from a BBF but super enjoyable nonetheless.

This one is superb. Stated age of 18but with distillery closed between 1996 and 2002 it is actually 23 or 24 years whisky

Cohiba Siglo III circa 2019

The Siglo III is and remains my favourite of the linea 1492 series. The reason is simple, the vitola is 42 ring gauge by 155 mm (or 6.1 inches) in length and that, I feel, is the ideal cigar size for me. I won this cigar in a recent FriendsofHabanos Competition prize so I'm grateful for the opportunity to smoke it.

The Linea 1492 series was announced in November 1992 as the new line of Cohiba intended to replace the premium Davidoff Chateau series which concluded in 1991. When these cigars did hit the market (in 1994), the Cohiba Siglo III, a coronas grandes cigar with a 42 ring gauge x 155 mm (or 6⅛ inches) length was the replacement cigar for the Davidoff Château Mouton Rothschild cigar in the Chateau series.

Today, the Cohiba Siglo III is only one of two regular production coronas grandes cigars in existence (the other is the Montecristo Tubos). The last one deleted from Habanos S.A's catalogue, the highly-regarded cigar enthusiast favourite, the Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo des Dieux was discontinued in 2014 but most coronas grandes-sized cigars were discontinued in the early-2000s soon after Habanos S.A. was 50% acquired by Altidis in 2000.

This Siglo III continued the trend of recent 2019/20 Habanos stock smoking well with minimum time rest. It's long been said on our forum that Cohiba is a marca that benefits from long-term aging (think five years and over) but lately it seems to me that Cohiba has smoked well a lot younger. Also, the Cohiba brand has been noted for its herbal qualities since its inception to the consumer market in the 1980s, yet I feel that recent Cohiba hasn't had as much herbal element in their cigars in comparison to Cohiba pre-2015. When I mention herbal flavours, I am referring of course to the quintessential Cohiba grass/hay. Grass indicates that the herbal flavour is sharper and more distinct in the blend, hay indicates that the herbal flavour is rounder and more melded.

Fortunately, I did get a quality Cohiba grass in this cigar, coupled with a sweet honey, citrus and light mocha coffee. Into the final third the cigar was slightly more woody but still smoked well with those aforementioned characteristic Cohiba flavours.

I smoked this as far as I could take it. For its age, this Cohiba Siglo III truly was a pleasure to smoke.

I have a fiver getting accustomed to my coolidor and am contemplating a box.  Given recent comments that they will be in their prime only fir a few years I am leaning towards other DC but curious of your thoughts.  It will take me some time to burn though a box of 25 of these big boys
