FOH'ers Daily Smoke

Another one of these excellent RUS / OMS (one or the other) JUL 15 batch of D4s. Great construction, draw and burn. Age has mellowed the spicy kick, but after the gentle first half, it’s still there in a pleasantly modulated guise. Only mid bodied now. A very good ‘staple’ cigar this, not grand or fine but playing its part to perfection.

I’m so impressed by the way Partagas keeps the core marca characteristics, but flexes them across the different votolas. From the punchy Short, through the fun and not too serious P2 to the all time classic Lusi. I particularly like the D4 / E2 contrast. One more savoury, spicy and rustic, the other more silky sweet and refined.

@Lrabold89 thanks. On the mend. I couldn’t wait any longer to have a cigar. I actually switched to nicotine pouches for a few days just to have some enjoyment. I didn’t need them but I said screw it. I started to feel better after I saw your legs in the precious post.

Was a pleasure to read just for the writing style alone.

That said, the PSD4 is a staple go-to in my collection, albeit recent production ones, which are certainly plenty enjoyable.

Only had like 2 pre-2019 ones I believe, cant recall the date of one, but 1 was a 2016 and was certainly very tasty and different than recent production ones.

Really enjoy these, but have only bought as singles so far so they were a little pricey for the size that way.

Perfectly reasonable price by the box though. Have one in my bookmarks to pick up one of these days, probably in the winter once I'm getting low on the other smaller smokes I'm already starting to order starting in November

@smbauerllc I keep smaller smokes for winter times and because I have two small kids. If time wasn’t a factor, I probably wouldn’t reach for these. They aren’t bad, but there are better.

I thought they were pretty good, but I'm a Montecristo whore, so that likely factors in, and at about $5ea box price is reasonable for what you get to me.

Open to suggestions on other small smokes for winter and before bedtime craving when I have limited time.

Very tasty and perfect draw and burn.

Construction wise, draw was a little tight until some runs with the PerfecDraw and wrapper started peeling in the middle but nothing that's a very big deal.

Definitely always a nice,long,enjoyable smoke

Thank you whoever rolled this. What a gorgeous smoke, my first La Trova.

Box code is ARS AGO 19 so just two years old. I’d been tying to save them a bit longer, but I really felt like trying this in what might be the last properly hot and sunny weather here. Seize the moment and enjoy the day.

Golden, slightly speckled thin wrapper, very fine looking construction. Sure enough, a Goldilocks draw from a generous punch, and while the burn was a bit erratic, the ash held and held and the flavours never got out of line.

And what flavours they were! Much closer to a mild Fundadores than to a full Vigia, there’s a real caramel and almond sweetness to this. Plain doughnuts. Milky rich tea biscuits. Soft, gentle smoke that begs to be tasted. The smoke off the foot is delicious, the smoke in the mouth cool and plentiful. Did I mention this was a pleasure?

Not huge transitions, not great intensity, and it burned fairly quickly for such a big cigar. But bloody hell this was lovely. Not my usual size but I’ll forgive that every single time if they perform like this.

Cohiba Siglo VI. These are obviously one of the premium Cubans. Some fortunate souls smoke a lot of them, but for most of us it's an occasion cigar. Expectations are likely to be high...

This one was from a TPO OCT 19 box. I was fortunate to be able to open and inspect quite a few boxes when I bought it, and I chose one that looked really good: beautiful thin wrappers and smart construction, moderate colorado colour with a touch of rosado, lovely fruity smell.

Opened with a large punch, the draw was tight but acceptable - no need for surgery with the poker. However, the first half-inch or so was disappointing. Nothing wrong with it, but no immediate hit of honey sweetness or that crazy citrus aroma Cohiba can sometimes deliver. My last Robusto was like eating caramelised orange peel. This was more on the grassy, pour-over coffee side of things. Perfectly ok and certainly refined, but no fireworks.

As the cigar smoked down things got more interesting. The flavour intensity built up, and so did the sense of richness. It remained savoury, and I began to think of plain potato crisps. The grassiness deepened to an autumnal hay. All very pleasant and contemplative.

Starting well under medium body, this crept up to maybe medium. Very good construction, a few touch ups required but the ash held well. And I found myself smoking it longer than I normally would, right down to the final inch. It never got out of shape.

So overall: good for a cigar and clear quality here, but not reaching the level one expects of the best Cuba has to offer, and certainly not the five-star experience I had with a similar age La Trova yesterday. I found myself wondering if a bit of dry boxing would help, as these were straight from long-term storage that has crept up to 67% RH at 21.5C. Not wild numbers of course, but probably a bit too wet. Dryer would probably help with both flavour and draw.

Also, my guess is that a few more years will bring out more flavour. Lots of folk put all their Cohiba away for at least 3-5 years and I try to keep my hands off too... but I was seduced by yesterday's excellent experience with a 2 year old Trinidad. 

So, the next one of these will be next summer, and I'll prepare it with a good spell in lower humidity. Glad to have only just started the box... but not rushing to find another right now.

Stacked up some of these little gems after a couple samples and glad I did. High complexity on the cheap—makes me feel like one of those reviewers who might get a couple dozen flavors out of a cigar haha. Meaty smoke, bbq spices in the background, toasted sugar sweetness, some nuts. Really keeps you hooked with some chnages for a relatively short experience. Excuse the charcoal fingers, had to get the fire pit sorted
