lancashirescott Posted November 8, 2009 Share Posted November 8, 2009 Ok no pics but I am planning a trip to Cuba in the new year and was wondering if anyone had done any Bonefishing or Tarpon around Cuba? I am just reading a guide on Cuba and it does mention both but that's about it, it lists all the Marlin, Tuna and Sailfish Agents but nothing in detail of the other two? I've a couple of PDFs named Cuba-Odyssey parts one and two which were previously available on the original Cigar Czar site and include some "interesting" fishing info. As they were authored by KG and originally published elsewhere, I will wait until permission is granted (or not) to post them. colt, don't specifically remember them but publish away (unless of course, they are politically controversial). as for bones and tarpon, a few of us are aiming to do bones post the festival - we fish at las salinas thought here are option. one of the best things you can ever do. we have not done tarpon in cuba but i am planning on staying post the festival etc and giving them a go. did you have dates, and any idea where in cuba you hoped to go? are you alone or how many? did you want to effectively do it yourself (and if so, do you speak spanish) or get on something organised. if the latter, we have a good mate who can organise things and i'll probably use him for the tarpon. don't rule out permit. Hi Ken, I have no specific dates yet but was looking to go around Feb/March but nothing is concrete yet, I was planning to go to Havana but since I have been doing a bit of reading this is now open aswell. I will probably only be going for a week with her indoors and possibly another couple, but it will probably be only me that will be fishing and as I have never fished for either or Permit probably be wise to do it with a guide or charter? Im afraid I dont speak Spanish either. Do you need to bring your own gear and if so does it have to be specialist Saltwater rods? Cheers Scott hi scott, definietly plan on bringing ALL the gear you'll need. some guides may have something, and perhaps the more expensive charters will supply, but the safest option is your own gear. a #9 will be fine for bones - usually a #7 or #8 is used but some go as low as #6 but i think a bit more is needed. for tarpon, i'm still only doing the research but everything i heard suggests you'll need more. have heard of people going as low as #10 but i would think realistically, especially if you have not done it before, minimum of #12. once reputable source told me to forget anything less than #14 or #15 with these fish. and for both, you'll need a heap more line than with a trout. a good bone can strip 150 metres plus. lord knows what a tarpon might do. i'll dig out the details of my mate and post. realistically, if you are only there a week, you will no doubt want a few days in havana so suspect you'll only have a couple of days. i'd stick to the bones first up and try las salanas. you'll love it.
